Are the posted questions getting worse?

Okay, an etiquette question as a Good Samaritan. How many times should you refuse money for helping a motorist with a disabled vehicle? I was walking down to the neighborhood 7-11 to get a drink and a couple with a disabled truch was in the right turn lane. I helped push the truch down to the 7-11 to get it off the roadway. The gentleman (who also pushed while his wife steered) gave me $40.00 for helping. I did say no initially but he was adament about giving me the money. Should I have refused the money a second or third time before accepting it?

At the second time of asking I might suggest they donate the $40 to their favourite charity - or the next charity collector they see - something like that. No-one likes this sort of situation to get awkward, so I'd probably take the money if they continued to press me on it (and donate the $40 myself).

  • I didn't expect anything in return for helping. I felt it was the right thing to do, especially since I was walking down that way any way. It was sad that many people, including a State Troop, just drove by without even offering to help

That State Troop was remiss in his/her duties ... now that I would report the date / time / location to the State Police headquarters ... that officer needs to be reprimanded for what he/she did NOT do.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Now, if you pushed it for a mile or two and it took half an hour... I'd just say thank you, take the money, tip my hat, and walk back to my truck... after buying a gatorade with my newfound riches.

It was maybe block to a block and a half. Not to far to help push a truck.

No, but at that point it's sounding like a matter of the owner's pride. He wants to buy you a nice dinner for being a nice guy and him having to accept your assistance. Nothing wrong with that, and you're a ton cheaper than the towtruck! Just roll with it, and have a nice steak on the man with the broken truck.

He just doesn't ever want to feel like he owes anyone, so, now he doesn't. *shrugs* Some people are wired like that. I get that mood myself.

I think he was more upset that the State Trooper drove past, not once, but twice without stopping to offer assistance. As for me, think I counted at least 10 cars that had to drive around him while I was walking down to the corner, and three more drove around as we got ready to push.

    That sounds familiar.

Couple years ago I had a car stall and refuse to restart on a highway (was traffic jam, so moving very slowly). After I figured that the car was not going to restart, I got out and started to push it off the car off the highway (only two lanes were open due to the roadworks and there was no emergency lane)

The 'gentleman' in the car behind me just hooted repeatedly, at best every other driver in that bumper-to-bumper very slow moving traffic just watched.

I would love to, but the timing doesn't work for me 🙁

EDIT: I'm feeling very zen and accomplished this morning. That will last until someone corrects me and I have to do the headdesk thing again. @=)

  • Hey Brandie, do you think you're going to WorldCon the next few years? Next year is in San Antonio and the year after is London. I was thinking about the sites that are bidding for 2015 and I realized you'd probably be happy about one of them. There are three sites bidding, one is Sokane, WA. Middle of nowhere. Another is the one I think you might be excited by: Orlando, FL. I won't be voting for that one though since the third one is in Finland! From everything I've heard, they run great cons in Finland and I'd love to go there.

You didn't miss anything by not going to Chicago, except for us not getting to meet. Chicago Worldcon was the worst run convention I've ever been to. If you had to miss one, this was the one. It is a shame too after Australia (too far) and Reno (seriously? Reno?) this was a chance for a central, big city con, but it was a disaster.

I do actually plan to make one of the next WorldCons, but I'm not sure which one.

It doesn't actually surprise me that ChiCon had problems. I'm saddened your experience wasn't a good one, but not shocked.

I think the worst part of the whole thing was the people watching the Hugos streamed on the internet. I don't know if you heard, but the copyright bots misinterpreted the showing of award winning t.v. show segments as copyright violation, so shut down the entire stream halfway through the awards ceremony. Nevermind that WorldCon had permission to show those snippets. The whole thing got locked down. Lot of people got mad over that.

Yup, and I don't blame them, especially since several of the "snippets" were just trailers that are shown on tv anyway. The ceremonies are now available on-line including the parts that were blocked. I'm looking forward to when the entertainment industry figures out what the hell it is doing and learns to work in the present rather than creating weird barriers.
