"Root" is the proper pronunciation as Nat King Cole taught us in the classic song "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66"
Actually, the noun is pronounced "root" (as the Mr. Cole was doing) and the verp is pronounced "rout" (rhymes with "doubt"). At least it is by everyone I speak with, here in Ameriker. ๐
