Reminds me of a joke.
Do you know the difference between an optimist and a pessimist?
Experience. 😛
Unfortunately it's not a joke often enough. Too often we find the optimist beaten into the pessimist by experience, which is sad.

I'm still an optimist! Then again I'm also very stubborn. : -)

Hi folks, this evening I’m collecting Symba from here: http://www.tvaw.org.uk/Adoption.htm. We’ve met already, he’s awesome. Not sure of the name though. Symba is a bit silly, it’s a misspelling of the lion king's name, Simba. So I’m calling him Ziggy.
Ziggy Wiggy Doodah.
Congratulations! It's not everyone that is lucky enough to be adopted by a feline!

Maybe there should be a college level course in "How to read error messages." A full semester class to teach people how to read and interpret error messages.
I would love to take that course. Sometimes those error messages get very obtuse for me.

Pet rent? Never heard of that over here.
Landlords in the States are adding it to the usual rental fees as a way to discourage pet ownership among renters or to pay for the damages done by said pets during the rental period.

Or to grab more cash from people who have no other choice. I've found they tend to make up charges to keep your deposit at the end of your rental period and will do the same about "pet damage" as well.

Some do, some don't. I've had it go both ways. As a landlord I've tried to be fair with people, but I do find that some people are irrational and don't want to pay for damages. I don't consider a pet peeing on my carpet to be normal if it's noticeable, and carpet has to be cleaned/replaced.

Two apartments ago, my landlord told me that they'd be replacing the carpet before I moved in or after I moved out, so that wouldn't be a problem. Then when I moved out, they charged my deposit for carpet cleaning AND my pet deposit for carpet cleaning and had charged me Pet Rent for 7 years to cover the cost of eventual carpet cleaning.
And yes, some do, some don't. There will be decent people and scam artists in almost any endeavor. I've found individual renters tend to be better toward tennants than corporations.

Hey, all. I have finally (I think) gotten subscriptions to my blog enabled through my new website. http://www.brandietarvin.com/[/url].
I'm still having trouble getting my books and SQL stuff loaded to the database and displaying on the proper pages, but the blogs themselves are up and running. As soon as I get the CMS part of the whole deal worked out, I'll let everyone know.
I'll probably start posting some SQL Blogs again soon. Nothing complicated until I get the CMS up and working, but some various ramblings and stuff.
EDIT: Let me know if you have trouble getting subscribed.

Hey Brandie... I noticed your LinkedIn profile has you in a new position - are you moving away from SQL, or is this additional stuff that you're piling on yourself? (To borrow from a magazine: Curious minds want to know!)
And Congrats!

How many Threadizens are planning on going to SQL Saturday 156 in Providence, RI on 9/15?
(I already count 5 presenters...I think we may need a SSC / Threadizen table for lunch!)

It has been a rare experience for me to post a question to this forum, but I will now. How about a poll?
Yesterday I was called upon to go back and look at the first SP I ever wrote (about 15 months ago). The SP is quite complicated, so much so that during its development nobody on the development team could do it right. So I wrote it from scratch, and with my very limited SQL experience at the time, I did the unspeakable and solved the problem with 2 nested CURSORs. That's right - 2 CURSORs! :w00t: In my defence I will say that this occurred before I adoped my mantra. 😀
Sometime after that, and after writing one other SP that contains a CURSOR (1 only, I swear!), I stumbled upon a statement by someone (can't remember who) that said "in your career you should write no more than 5 CURSORs." I take some solace in the fact that my total stands at 3 and I've never again had to resort to one since I came across that quotation.
So now onto my question.
If I rewrite this SP to use 1 or 0 CURSORs, will the SQL-verse acknowledge this reduction in my career CURSOR usage and lower my career total CURSOR count?
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.
