Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Brandie Tarvin (8/9/2012)

Also, I wanted to share this which has been going around the writers groups of late. Pasting images in the Thread is copyright infringement unless the picture is in public domain or owned by the person doing the posting. We complain enough about people who do CI or plagiarism on our articles. So why do we engage in such behavior with other people's pictures?

You can't paste a picture in the forums, only link to it and do an HTTP GET. I think that's poor practice since you can't control the other side of the image, and you put a load on someone else's server.

What I've seen become fairly accepted is to load the image on your server and send it to the client from there, but link back to the original page/image.

On the forums, you have to just provide a URL

When is the last time anyone here actually used a physical phone book?

    This morning.

Putting it under the table leg isn't "using" it.

Here we go again. Let's berate an OP because of things he/she may not even have any control over. I will agree that the OP could have provided more info that would make helping easier.

    Yellow pages or white?

    White

Edit: as to it's purpose... the intended purpose of looking up a person's phone number.

-- Ignore this, bad joke that's not going to work as planned... I'm not going to get it wordy enough without copy/pasting a phone book or something...

I'm sure I can easily get quite a bit more verbose than a phone book...

Which leads to the existential debate of ... If your name isn't in the phone book, do you actually exist?

What happens if your name was in the phone book, but someone erased it (or worse - tore the page out)?

    Think about it...

"Page 73 - Johnson, Navin R.! I'm somebody now! Millions of people look at this book everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity - your name in print - that makes people. I'm in print! Things are going to start happening to me now." - Steve Martin, The Jerk

I haven't seen a reference to that scene in AGES!

  • I used a phone book on Monday, as a matter of fact. Both yellow and white pages. For the original intended purposes, even.

Yeah, I love that scene from The Jerk.

  • Jason,

BTW, I didn't mean to imply that you were stealing anything. I was 1) misundertanding how images get posted to the Thread (since I don't use that feature often), and 2) passing along a warning that my memory triggered to due to the discussion of the photo.

While I may have been insensitive on the subject, I still like to make sure people know about copyright issues. I apologize for my poor wording and any offense I may have given.

SQL Server where code portability and standards adherence are far more important than performance.

Nope, can't step away from the keyboard, got things running on a VM I have to monitor. Plus, lunch time is only 1.5 hours away.
