I have the same ill feelings towards the cloud. I don't know who the driver really is or whether or not they even know which side of the road to drive on when it comes to security, etc.

That is pretty much my feeling.

It's one thing if my employer (for example) creates a corporate wide cloud and puts all its stuff there. Then we IT people know we're responsible for this, even though it's floating above us.

But to go to an outside source, who may have contracts stating they are responsible, and trusting them with my data, my security, and the idea that they will be there (with my data intact) when the sun rises tomorrow morning?

Yeah. Not confident enough yet in the technology to go there. Maybe once it's matured a little and people have figured out how to tell the fly-by-night-golddiggers from the solid-always-be-there-companies, it'll be a different story.

You are over-optimistic about the chances of avoiding the fly-by-night-gold-diggers. All they have to do is claim their stuff is good and make it a bit cheaper than the competent people, and some know-it-all bean counter will overrule all technical advice and insist the company goes for the gold-diggers' products. That's why the top bean counter is called a CFO - but don't tell him the F stands for Foolishness, not Finance, or he'll make trouble.

Of course there are some CFOs who are competent, and are quite against buying snake oil even when it's cheaper than anything useful. On the rare occassion when you have one of those, the CEO will overrule him and enforce doing the wrong thing.

edit: Or am I just too cynical/pessimistic today?

Heh... their testing was flawed. They forgot that you need to ground the hat to make it effective. Long wire down the back of the shirt, down a pantleg, to the bottom of a shoe. To keep from having the heel from having to be in constant contact, a carbon "string" is allowed to flop about. Looks like an untied shoe to those that notice.

You also need at least 2 needles with the point pinting to the sky. Works like a lightning rod to bleed off the trons.

Ann and I and our three boys spent several days with Nikki before she became unable to communicate, and stayed with her until the end. She was only 44 years old when she died.

Today is the first time I've felt up to looking at email, or at SQLServerCentral, or in fact doing anything that doesn't relate in some way to Nikki. Slowly but surely becoming reconciled to the idea that I've outlived her, instead of her outliving me.

Hugs and sympathy are coming your way. Please let us know if there's anything we can do to help you out.

Glad you got to spend some time with her. So sorry for your loss. There are no words. A parent losing their child is probably the most heart wrenching thing a person can endure. Keeping you and your family in our thoughts.

Steve, will there be a SSC Party at Summit again this year? If so, can I put in an early plug for a non-gambling reduced/free entry option? I still have my chip tickets from the last two years and although they are cool (should I frame them?), I'm not really a collector.... :-D.

    Thanks,

    Chad

AFAIK. Need to start checking now. I'll let you know

This is a textbook example of a binomial probability distribution where (p) the probability of the toast falling butter side down is 80% and the probability that it will fall butter side up (1-p) is 20.

If you'd like to model your toast in SQL with binomial random numbers, you can refer to my article here: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/SQL+Uniform+Random+Numbers/91103/

That's alright, that article deserves the odd plug. 🙂
