2 days of meetings is unfortunate. That's enough to drive anybody mad.

    OMG

Please, I really hope this person was joking.

    Oh god not him.

He's the most important reason I have such a high post count. Trying to help him usually results in 20+ posts.

He also asks questions a lot that can be easily found on Google. When you point that out, he responds with that it is faster to wait for an answer from the experts than to search it himself.

Need an answer? No, you need a question

Maybe we should all try waiting 24 hours before responding to his questions. I know that it won't happen, but...

  • Wow finally caught up with the Thread.

    Lost my way a few months ago, moved didn't have full internet, etc... Was going to try and say something witty about all that I have caught up with, but with Tom's recent news I will simply say;

Tom you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers

Ladies, Gentlemen, and Threadizens of all shapes and sizes! Come one, come all for the latest news of the day!

Me, your humble dba, from out of the blue, happened to have thrown into his lap the proverbial dream job. (Or did it fall from the sky and bean me? Either way, it's a silver platter.) It seems like it is everything that I always wanted - indeed my dream job. So today, I've submitted my resignation with my company. (Actually, I submitted it last week, and just turned down their counter-offer today, but hey, whose splitting hairs here???)

I'll be starting the new job in a couple of weeks. I'll be a DBA with a small company that some of you'll in the northeast corridor might have heard about... Ntirety. I do believe that this is going to be an awesome experience, and am looking forward to working with these fine guys and gals.

Belated congratulations Wayne! Even though I don't really know you other than sharing a few threads with you.

How can I become a DBA?

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Need to UNPIVOT? Why not CROSS APPLY VALUES instead?[/url]

The thread seems very quiet. I've been away three days and there are only 62 new posts on it.

But I may not find the energy to read even those few posts.

Life has suddenly changed. Our daughter is in hospital and very unlikely to come out again. We originally thought it was something that that would be fixed quickly, and didn't worry much, but the medical team discovered it was not quite so simple late last week. Ann and I flew back to the UK on Friday night and I spoke to Nikki at the hospital by phone on Saturday, and she seemed fairly OK, so I planned to go up and see her on Monday. Then on Sunday I got a call from the hospital - it wasn't just not quite so simple, but a good deal worse. I drove up on Monday morning and spent most of 3 days visiting there, mostly with Nikki but also talking to the medical team. Early this afternoon teh medical team's view changed from "difficult to deal with" to "not curable, only limited palliative measures possible, unlikely to be able to return home". Her mother, Ann, was too ill to travel on Monday so I came back this afternoon to pick her up and will drive back up there with her tomorrow, so that she too can visit.

My deepest condolences to you sir. I too left this thread for a time and this was the first post I saw on my return. I cannot even begin to imagine what you must be going through.

Condolences, sir. Hope everything goes as well as it possibly could.

Oh lordy. I lost a brother in a similar fashion. It went from slight blurring of the vision to massive liver and brain cancer virtually overnight. He died about a month later. He was only 45. My thoughts are definitely with you, ol' friend. It's never easy even if you're prepared.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

And there is no incentive for him to look it up himself because we keep giving him answers. We continue to reward the behavior we don't like with an answer and slap on the wrist. The pain of the slap is worth it because he got his answer. If we stop answering those stupid questions and just slap him on the wrist he will eventually start to look up the basics himself. Of course we as a community are probably unlikely to withhold answers to such basic things because of the very reason those of that post do so...maybe we need to call this the Lynndrome. 😀

  • Sean,

I'm so glad I wasn't drinking when I just read your reply - Lynndrome, definantly a SOM moment!

Just had to restore a DB from this mornings backup. Been waiting since 9:30 this morning to see if the upgrade today was working. It failed at the first update. But had to wait for the all clear to restore DB. So that was good on my part, backup worked, SQL Scripts were prepared and backout plan worked. So that's project success o Backout plan 1

And Buck Woody just laughed at one of my tweets.

So that's been a pretty good day for me. Think I'll call it quits! 😉

    Rodders...

  • I'm trying to decide if I should be happy or insulted, I mean really, Lynndrome? 😉 :w00t: 😛
