Yeah, I created the import package manually. I ended up getting the table structures by using an openquery in a cursor loop through a list of the Oracle tables obtained with a query against all_tables. It is slow, it is tedious, but it is more reliable. I worked out the permissions, needed to either encrypt the package with a password instead of a user key or set up a proxy, neither of which I'd done before, so at least I'm learning new things!
Never encrypt with user key in SSIS, it only gives troubles ahead, as you probably figured out by now π
My experience has been that "Don't Save Sensitive.." and relying on Trusted Connections is by far the easiest way to go.
So where do you get the passwords from for connections then? I don't know about Trusted Connections.
Trusted connections, also known as windows users/qroups. SQL Trusts Windows to authenticate the user.
Ah, yeah that's not going to work in this case.

Apparently, I just made one of the help desk guys very happy. He passed on a user problem with an Access db that has become unwieldy asking for solutions. My response was: "We don't support Access. If this database is necessary to the users to do their jobs, they can submit a project to have the db upgraded to a scalable, backed up, and monitored solution."I thought he was going to throw a fit. Instead, he digitally "hugged" me because I apparently told the users exactly what he's been trying to explain to them for months.
Huh. I guess DBAs and Help Desk Geeks can get along after all. π
We haven't supported Access for 10 years, but they keep handing it out to the users.
So we are our own worst enemies arond here some days.

I prefer Windows Authentication. If it's not possible, I use DontSaveSensitive and store the password in a package configuration inside a SQL Server table.
That way I can trust SQL Server to do the security.

Anyone with good to excellent knowledge of Reporting Services, your input here would be much appreciated. I think it would be a better choice than what the OP is suggesting.
I wouldn't even claim good knowledge of RS, but added my 2 cents worth.
I too think RS would be a good solution, especially to select (not type in) the parameters.

OP thinks RS would force the users to adapt to him rather than him adapt to the users. Also, added additional requirements not previously mentioned in original post or mock-up.

Sorry for the code, but I need a place to keep these solutions for a hypothetical problem on another thread.Wow! Working with Oracle really did put the pinch on you. π
Actually, it is he-who-is-without-clues that put the pinch on me. :w00t:
Trying a different tact to see if we can get him to finally give us what we need to help him.
Hi, Lynn.
Do we need to do an intervention?

Hi, Lynn.

Actually, no. The latest piling on of he-who-is-without-clues was enough. I posted my various versions of the solution to my hypothetical problem that I asked him to solve, and have walked away. Took a peek though and it doesn't look like he's come back.
I had expected his latest post asking for help to improve the performance of his stored procedure, and was hoping he may have finally seen the light. I was hoping by taking a different tact, it may even help. Guess we'll never know.

Nah, he's not going to come back. I'm sure he'll start another thread very soon and get some other victims attracted.
Liked Eugene's dbo.p_ShowMeWhenICanGoHome though. Yeah, it was a pile-on, but I learned something when I saw RAISERROR (@msg,10,1) WITH NOWAIT and actually ran the SP.

Only problem is he won't have learned anything. So much that could have been done weeks ago had he just listened, read, and posted what was requested.

Sure, but one can only help so far. Slowly I'm starting to wonder whether he's not just a Troll who's trying to provoke all kinds of not so funny reactions from The Experts.
