Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • I'm happy to entertain moderator nominations. It helps to have others that can move threads if they're in the wrong spot. I hate to have people censoring though, I'd rather take that on myself.

An RBAR-B-Q sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should book a restaurant at PASS next year. Or meet up at the MVP Summit of enough of us are there.

I don't think Jeff was talking about censoring, just being able to set a "twit" (to use a term used in several posts on this thread) alert flag on a thread.

    Jeff

I particularly liked ol' Bit Bucket's response... I'm gonna have to add him to the pork chop hall of fame.

Jeff should I be proud of this nomination and start working on my acceptance speech, or should I start ducking now?

I think he is saying your pork chop was quick, short, and to the point.

Ah,.. the Pork is strong in this one...

  • I always wonder what those things mean next to the threads. I tend to ignore them.

Not sure I want a "twit" flag out there. As much as it might be fun, I would hate to insult someone that is just ignorant.

Heh... yeah... and he posts at almost the close of business and expects an answer before 10 the next day... gotta love some of these folks.

I don't pay much attention to times things are posted, seeing as the person may be in any timezone. From my point of view, he posted at midnight.

So far, he's only letting a little arrogance out... will it be the tip of an iceberg, or is he genuinely in a panic. Notice, that's not a question 😉

I think he's a developer in over his head. He's written the app, now it's slow and now the Powers that Be want explanations and answers, and he doesn't know where to start.

Heh... no Ron.. it was a compliment... no need to duck.

He's back..... But looks like he doesn't like our "requirements" for getting help and

I'll be looking for a forum a bit more consistent with my prior experience so as not to waste your time.

    .

He did thank us for the code I posted.

Nope... he thanked you. He gave me a hard time when I asked him to post some decent data.

Just messin' with ya, Steve. Twits don't need a flag, anyway. 😀

  • Back to the original topic of this thread... And well, maybe it is this time: Do posters think we're answering bots instead of real people? http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic619172-1291-1.aspx. It seems he's going to try his luck at another forum from now on...

  • Couldn't help myself. I did a google search on the OP's name. He's an Access guy and, to his credit, has posted helpful answers to others in the forums where he hangs out. I'm not sure what got up his back so much about our posts, but there it is.

  • QOD for 12/17/08:

    DB Recovery

If I create a database in simple recovery mode in SQL Server 2005, then backup the database, then add 1000 records, then change the recovery mode to full, then add 500 more. Can I recover using the log backups?

The available answers were yes, no or none of the above. 14% (currently) selected none of the above. What does that mean exactly? Maybe you can, maybe you can't restore the log? When would something like that occur? Seems kind of cut and dried to me. Either you can or can't. Anyway, I've followed this thread from the beginning and agree with most of the posts. I've kind of held back because I don't want to offend anybody and because there simply wasn't much more that I could add that hadn't already been stated....but are the folks asking these types of questions the same people who answered "none of the above"? I have nothing against newbies (if that's who answered like that), Lord knows I was one once, but come on, with Goggle, BOL and all the forums out there - this is very basic knowledge for any DBA-wannabe. How do you get back to a point in time due to a disaster? That's SQL Server 101. Maybe it's just me. I haven't had my coffee yet so maybe I'm a little irritable (more than usual anyway :D). I simply cannot tolerate ineptitude at the moment. Sorry for the early morning rant. 😉

  • Actually, the thread was originally about the poor posting, not the lack of ability of the posters. It's ok to ask basic questions, but some posts seem like spending 30 seconds in books online could resolve the issue. And then there are some questions that simply do not make sense, or the OP will not give any information...the old:

"my query is slow, what could it be?"

    with nothing else included.

I totally agree and I know where the post started. You know how some of these tend to morph. I was going to start a new thread but it kind of fit in here as well. I know there are several (many?) gurus who have a link in their signature to point people to the "how to's" of posting and I agree, a bunch of questions posted can be more clear with respect to the OP's need. But your point about "spending 30 seconds in BOL" validates my rant a little bit. Basically, a very simple "look-around", whether the web, BOL or whatever, can yield a whole lot of valuable info, especially the basics.

BTW - "SQL server restore" on Google - 2.6 million hits. Granted most may not be particularly useful but it's a start.

OK, I'm done. I've had coffee and am now ready to push the reset button on my day. :w00t:
