The Dixie Flatline (4/24/2012)
Also (if you can find them anywhere) these are three of the best sci-fi novels I ever read by an author nobody has ever heard of.I can't speak too highly of Daniel Keys Moran. In order:
Emerald Eyes
The Long Run
The Last Dancer
Amazon has them paperback and kindle.
Edit: well second hand paperback for $150, or kindle for $4.99 (at least in my region)

Just remembering those books got me to googling.
You can get them off his mirror site here: http://www.immunitysec.com/resources-dkm.shtml in either PDF or RTF format.
His wiki page is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Keys_Moran

#declare NewTopic;Grant, you mentioned the other day that you'd finished the book "Temporary Duty" This one http://www.amazon.com/Temporary-Duty-ebook/dp/B00531CPHC/? Good? Recommended?
Looking for some good sci-fi again (space ships, interstellar travel, etc). Too much fantasy around.
I enjoyed that one. If you haven't read Space Prison or The Fringe Worlds, give them a try.

Heh, you guys reminded me that I want to order up the final books in the Dresden series and finish that... 🙂Final? <sob>
If it finishes where I think it does, I have two books to go.
I'm personally up to White Night. At first Changes was supposed to end the series (according to rumors I can't find to link from work), but Butcher continued them anyway. Apparently I was misinformed about Ghost Story being the true final, Cold Days is currently being written with a TBD announce date. Ghost Story apparently isn't in Paperback yet though (according to wikipedia).
So, nope, sorry to disappoint your disappointment. Apparently our favorite hard-boiled in-over-his-head magical detective isn't going to disappear for a while yet. Even if he IS dead... ish.

I just finished reading "Shadows In Flight", if you've ever read Orson Scott Card and like Bean better than Ender. Recommended.Intriguing... I loved Ender's game. Rest of that series, not so much
Agreed. Ender's Game is a glory. The rest... meh.

I enjoyed it. A lot. The first third was better than the last two thirds. It's a first novel & you can tell, but it was still a very fun read.Good. I'll pick it up next time I go book shopping.
Also, Lost Fleet is still going on even though the war with the Syndic is over. I just started that one too.
Ah! That reminds me, I have the 1st book of the Lost Fleet sitting on the secondary bookshelf (aka the dining room table)
Oh, and I said too much fantasy, but I've bought two books of this series and love them

Harry Dresden cross Merlin cross who knows what. He's an iron-age Celtic druid who lives in modern-day Arizona, consorts with the Morrigan and runs a new age book shop.
Yeah, I read those. Fluffy candy but fun.

I loved the story of Ender's Game, but it really didn't hit me for what it was at the time. I saw it coming... ish... but not to that extent, but it was a "Woot dude!". Hey, I was young.
What truly ran me over was about 3 months later the "Fridge Logic" of Ender's game really hit me.
I was playing a game of Nectaris (Military Madness). Old turnbased strat game. I'm sitting there and could suddenly picture some guys in military outfits knocking on my door with cameras and the like and "Congratulations! You just conquered Azerbackistan!"
The horror that came over me at the surprise that must have caused a kid who went out of his way not to harm anyone unless he absolutely had to and thought he was playing a game was... awakening. Particularly because I could see myself ignoring a bunch of stuff that got random units killed off on the outskirts because I was simply too lazy to MOVE them, and an extra turn without worrying about some stuff was worth it.
(blink). You died because I was too lazy to move a unit. Not for any. other. reason. Apply that to hundreds of 'games'. Gyeah.

While I enjoyed Ender's Game (sort of saw it coming but still had fun reading it), it was Ender's Shadow that rocked me. Telling the same story from a different perspective made for a great read. Seriously, everyone should read both books back-to-back.
Now, for everyone who has ever read the first book:

AND another thing... I'm looking at trailers for the Ender's Game movie that's supposed to come out next year. I'm seeing lots of predictable space battle scenes but NO BATTLE ROOM!! That's as stupid as trying to make Starship Troopers without including powered armor!
Oh wait... they did that too.

Don't worry about it. Amazon's quite willing to sell it to me in dead tree format (with extra shipping costs), they just won't sell it in e-book format.
That's what I hate about the whole 'region' thing. It's not that they are making the book unavailable in my region, they're perfectly willing to ship me a copy (for more than the book costs), they just won't sell me the e-book.
Ultimately means I don't buy it from them at all and go to a local seller (local amazon imitator ships any order over R250 free anywhere in the country)
