I only play antique games, but some guys I work with speak very highly of World of Tanks. It's a free download and it's a different type of first person shooter. Speed, armor, and gunpower vary from tank to tank. Sometimes a tank goes by so fast you can't turn your turret fast enough to shoot it. Beyond that you have a crew whose skills increase over time. I'm told it's very addictive.

If I have an hour or two I can spend on looking more at the screen, I play Homeworld.

I have only one word of advice: if you are a novice, don't try to join the online version. The bunch over there has been at it for 13 years and you will get annihilated before you can say "Taidan."

Don't worry, I'm done. This person doesn't want to help us help him. He simply wants us to try and do his work for him with as little information as possible.

As far as I am concerned, he is on his own from now on.

I am starting to do guest posts on my writing blog and I'm wondering if any of you Threadzian authors (who have done editing or writing on SQL Server books) would like to cross-post an article about writing / editing over on my blog.

I'm willing to publish previously written posts or new posts. Basically, I'm looking for any How-Tos or advice on technical writing / editing, or even posts about your particular writing process. Things that other people can learn from that doesn't immediately require them to know T-SQL or SQL Server specifically.

FYI: I'm still having problems with my PM inbox, so do not PM me. I won't see it.

Not sure I have anything useful, but feel free to dig through scarydba.com to see if you can using something. Just ask before taking it.

Okay, I will apologize for bringing this up in the Thread. But I'm getting tired of writing private messages.

Yes, Gail, I was at the last Summit in Seattle and attended the presentation you and Grant gave on Monday. Tuesday night, I was at the reception/casino night, intending to see Jeff get his award. Before the ceremony got started, I had a pulmonary embolism. Don't bother looking it up. It means multiple blood clots in both lungs, and it feels like a heart attack. I was stupid and didn't ask for help getting up to the aid station, but I made it on my own and they got me to the emergency room at a nearby hospital within 20 minutes. Even the other guys from my company didn't know where I was until the hospital called them the next day. Obviously I missed the rest of the week, which I greatly regret.

Long story short, I survived and it's ancient history now.

    WTF!

And we all just left you in the hospital there? Crap. I didn't know. Glad to hear you're better though. But I feel awful. Doing all the right stuff? Losing weight, eating better, exercise?

    On a side note:

New rule, Threadizens, if you go down at a conference, you have to get word back to another Threadizen. Some of us actually do care (a little).

More than just about caring. It's about having each other's backs. Many of us travel to these things without any family or friends along. How will any of them know there's a problem if we don't tell anyone, including Threadizens that are at the conference?

    +1 to the New Rule.

  • Unrelated question:

Has anyone heard of a company called Kaseya? They apparently do IT software, user conferences, and webinars, but I can't find much more out about them - reviews, etc.- (unless my Googlefu just sucks today). They have some interesting webinars coming up that I'm tempted to take, but since I've never heard of them before today, I'm leary that this might just be another spam marketeer pimping their own products.

I should add, I've promised myself The Old Republic as a 'thesis submitted' purchase, and I'll probably lose a few months to that.

Considering trying out EVE. Thought I'd download the client while I'm in the UK and see how it goes, nothing much to lose.

The Secret World looks very intriguing, maybe partially because I ran a table-top game with similar themes a few years back.

SWTOR is fun, but not much at end game right now. Most people play for the story while levelling. The lack of a good "grouping" tool and the fact that the raiding and flashpoint ordering is odd make end game very grindy to get anything done.

WoW - well... it's WoW. The Mists of Pandaria beta is out and uninspiring to most. But it is one of the largest MMO's in the country.

Diablo 3 - Going to be extremely fun based on the beta. I'm looking forward to it. Even dusted off my old copy of Diablo 2 to play.

Dixie: Ever heard of Empire? For ancient games it fits the bill, written in the 1970's on a VAX and slowly ported to new platforms over the years. The author is also the creator of the D programming language. The version I play was done in about 1985 by Interstel Corp that put a nice GUI onto the game. Still one of the most addictive games I've ever played.

Who plays MMOs and which ones?

I've just quit the one I played for a few years, they added a 'pay to win' mechanism in. πŸ™ Looking for a new stomping ground & thought I'd see what others play and why.

I'm currently playing City of Heroes/Villains, and EVE Online. Keep thinking I need to add a fantasy-genre game to the mix, since I stopped playing WoW a little over a year ago.

Tried Rift. Too much "we're going to rip of WoW as much as we can while avoiding lawsuits".

Tried Conan. Enjoyable if you don't mind all the teenagers playing female characters because they can go topless in that game. They launched the game before it was ready and it was very, very buggy at first, but I hear it's better now. Haven't played in a LONG time.

Haven't tried the new Star Wars one, don't intend to. Yeah, it's "space fantasy", but I'm just not interested in playing a Boba Fett rip-off, and I understand from friends that it's about all there is to do in there. They're already losing accounts from lack of content and buggy game-play.

But I'm enjoying CoH immensely. If you like the superhero genre at all, I definitely recommend it. The devs are adding new content at a very rapid pace, and the game just keeps getting better.

EVE Online is sort of MMO-meditation for me. Gotta keep a very Zen attitude in that game. Sort of adrenalized-serenity.

  • Just read Riya_Dave's latest post, just more of the same "I'll repost what I have already posted, maybe with a few minor but incomrehensible changes."

I wanted to say something, but I just walked away. I am glad, however, that I am not the only one who is confused about what he is asking. I was beginning to doubt my own sanity.

Not sure, but I may have gleened some info from that last post when combined with his other thread. Posted some slight changes to his code there. May want to suggest his looking at it if ignores the notification from that thread.

I used to play City of Heroes a lot, but I think I haven't logged in in about a year. I should really cancel my membership.

    Dixie: Ever heard of Empire?

Back in the DOS days, I wasted many an hour on Empire. Lately, my turn-based timewaster has been Civilization IV, but I uninstalled it and went cold-turkey. Right now I kill about half an hour at night playing (don't laugh please) the original DOS version of Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon.
