Well I was... except for the part about dying at PASS. 😉

Please remember this year that "Extreme programming styles" does not usually include stunt bike tricks while holding a white board setting up architecture designs. You missing BOTH ramps last year was a bit of a downer.

Also, no, you can't do that whole "No parachute base jumping" thing you requested into the really boring meeting to 'spark things up'. It was turned down in committee as not being entertaining enough and costing too much on cleanup.

You're right. Evil Kraig, and I'm sorry I disappointed you.

You should be. If I'm not laughing, the world isn't funny enough. Everyone takes their lead from me and should absolutely look to me as the only important one.

On a serious note, what happened? I didn't hear about you having health issues last year but it's possible I missed a day or two (and 500+ posts) of the thread.

Wait, what? I know I've been pretty busy at the last couple summits, but to have missed something like that....????

  • Okay, I will apologize for bringing this up in the Thread. But I'm getting tired of writing private messages.

Yes, Gail, I was at the last Summit in Seattle and attended the presentation you and Grant gave on Monday. Tuesday night, I was at the reception/casino night, intending to see Jeff get his award. Before the ceremony got started, I had a pulmonary embolism. Don't bother looking it up. It means multiple blood clots in both lungs, and it feels like a heart attack. I was stupid and didn't ask for help getting up to the aid station, but I made it on my own and they got me to the emergency room at a nearby hospital within 20 minutes. Even the other guys from my company didn't know where I was until the hospital called them the next day. Obviously I missed the rest of the week, which I greatly regret.

Long story short, I survived and it's ancient history now.

  • Eeeep. Nasty.

I remember that you were there on the Monday, I was so busy running around everywhere the rest of the week that I didn't pick up on your absence. One thing I regret about getting more involved in the events of the summit is less time to chat with people. Need to rectify that this year (if I'm even there)

  • Personally I'm voting for 'ignore the trolls'

    #declare NewTopic;

Who plays MMOs and which ones?

I've just quit the one I played for a few years, they added a 'pay to win' mechanism in. 🙁 Looking for a new stomping ground & thought I'd see what others play and why.

Final Fantasy XI: Older graphics and the elite cliques are hard to get involved with since it's tough to level.

Final Fantasy XIV: Wait for the entire rebuild of the universe. What they sold us originally was a Beta test gone horribly wrong. Incredibly grindy to boot. I gave up on them (after adoring FFXI for years) after 10 months. Maybe in 3 or 4 years I'll go back and visit.

Empirion: World's gone dead, fun but enchant system was frustrating as all get out.

    MMORTS:

Shattered Galaxy: Used to be a great game but now it's all about perfect builds. Add to that it's an antique. Still has a solid game foundation though and was still fun.

End of Nations: Anxiously awaiting it to come out.

    Kinda MMO:

A Valley Without Wind: Primarily a single player game but has MP servers and is decent. Done by an Indie developer, about to release out of beta over the weekend.

    Waiting for:

Diablo III, but mostly to co-op with a buddy.

  • I should add, I've promised myself The Old Republic as a 'thesis submitted' purchase, and I'll probably lose a few months to that.

Considering trying out EVE. Thought I'd download the client while I'm in the UK and see how it goes, nothing much to lose.

The Secret World looks very intriguing, maybe partially because I ran a table-top game with similar themes a few years back.

I should have mentioned Eve, I played it for about two years. I can only imagine my complaints with the game have gotten worse.

If you're not into signficant politics it's annoying to play in, as you HAVE to be part of a company and work together heavily to not get shot out of the sky in non-protected space. In protected space, the fights are interesting at first but get old fast.

Add to that until you've got 3-4 years in the game you literally cannot play with any of the 'big toys', because the entire skilling system is based on RL Time. Even at 4 years in, you'd have had to concentrate on getting only to THAT toy, and will be missing hundreds (I'm not kidding) of support skills you'd need to effectively use it.

There's a reason that people sell characters in that game and it's a very required market. Add to that the frustration of a pure PvP environment sometimes and you'll feel like you can never 'build' yourself past a certain point unless someone else lets you.

However, one of the really good things I have to say about Eve is the marketplace. It's very effective and thorough, and is completely player driven, so market variations and all market-manipulation techniques are viable in a microcosm. There's a thesis paper out there (somewhere) that uses the Eve microcosm as its baseline for market manipulation techniques.

Then again, I've always been more PvE then PvP in my video games that aren't FPS's or RTS, and even in RTS I like Co-Op as much as I like PvP. PvP has always been 'an amusing distraction' in between the real game times for me in any MMO or the like.

  • I only play antique games, but some guys I work with speak very highly of World of Tanks. It's a free download and it's a different type of first person shooter. Speed, armor, and gunpower vary from tank to tank. Sometimes a tank goes by so fast you can't turn your turret fast enough to shoot it. Beyond that you have a crew whose skills increase over time. I'm told it's very addictive.
