Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • I had to complain about this somewhere.

I'm creating a visio diagram for the database behind a commercial product. There's a lot wrong with this database, but we've just determined that they use the same name for the column that is the primary key of two different tables. The data in these two columns do not map to one another and they're used as foreign keys all over the database.

I just registered for the SQL Server Saturday in Waltham in May. At the end is the ubiquitous "captcha" to verify authenticity. The word it wanted me to type in to verify my authenticity? "fraudulently"

I should be seeing you there then.

Excellent. Sadly it wont be as fancy as last years, last years was fantastic.

    I have heard that rumor

It's no rumor. It's a month away and no schedule is up yet.

ON that note SQLSaturday #146 - Nashua NH is now accepting speakers http://www.sqlsaturday.com/146/callforspeakers.aspx and we'd love to have a bunch of threadizens. The date in October 20.

Thanks for that Jack, I hope to attend. Will you be coming to Newington next week?

    Rich

Nope. I'm going to be in Houston all next week. That'll likely be the only meeting I miss.

    I've seen worse.

In one of the applications I have to extract from, every PK column is called "ID", then other tables FK to it with a random name of <tablename>_ID, <tablename> or something entirely unrelated depending on which of their developers designed that particular table. You literally can't write a query without interrogating the metadata to see where FK relationships exist.

Then, to make things worse, I'll assume that a reference to <tablename> in another table links back to the table I want, only to find that it's a denormalised code or name that's randomly added in.

Is this an internal database or a commercially available product? Horrible either way.

Oddly enough, that captcha came up when I was doing something at one of my writer association sites.

On that point, do you have any sites/apps that you can get a writing practice topic or starting scene or similar each day? I had a site a while back, but it disappeared.

I know some people post such things (or used to). I'll look around and see what I can find. In the meantime, does this help? http://brandietarvin.livejournal.com/48600.html

and I thought that was the Today's Random Word thread...

    That's a psychology project. @=)

Actually, though, that is a good place to start too.

I have lost track of which post you are responding too, but will happily assume you're talking about my work and not someone else's. @=)

I like the "don't make me do any work, just give me the answers!" attitude. The writing is horrible too, everything about his(her) posts smacks of laziness.

    No, hostile. Definitely hostile.

Not laziness, entitlement. I am entitled to get the answers I want without having to work for them.
