Well, apparently we can't accept the restrictions he has to work under on this project. Never mind that the restrictions are ridiculous to begin with and make the project almost impossible to complete with any sense performance.
Agreed.
It is with restrictions like that, that a DBA should stand up and remind them how ridiculous they are being.

i think he needs to head to his boss and say its ridiculous restrictions and present 2 or 3 different options (i think there were that many in the thread). what i would do.
think he is getting an attitude since his bosses are placing restrictions that limit what he can do. and he knows it.

Well, I had to ask the question, I hope he can say more than "Because that is what I was told." Almost as bad as "If it works, what's the difference?"

I think the attitude comes from a lot of frustration.

I would agree. I have tried my humble best.

Sorry to have to correct you here, Tom. SS stands for Sturm Staffel, i.e. Storm Squadron, not Schutz Staffel, which would mean prettry much the opposite. Loosely translated that would mean Protective Squadron. 😉I'm afraid you are wrong, Jan.

Indeed I am :w00t:. But at least we got a bit of a military history lesson out of it. Thanks for your research, Tom.:-)

I wonder if log shipping is an option to a db setup for auditing.

Not really, because the restore won't fire triggers or anything else.
Replication would be my choice, can have triggers on the subscription DB or edit the replication procedures, and it doesn't require any changes to the DB, just to the server. But the OP vetoed that last time.

Wow. Reading that thread and comparing it to the several 17+ hour shifts I've got through the past couple of days...
I think I'll keep my current job. My boss and his boss know better than to let anyone tie our hands that way.

At least the workarounds everyone is coming up with are fascinating reading. Were I in his situation and my boss gave me the restrictions he's been give, I'd simply say "OK, and how am I supposed to do that? I don't think it can be done, but if you have a way I'd love to learn it." Sometimes throwing it back at the decision makers is the only way to get any progress. I've been in situations where the decision makers simply didn't know that what they were asking was impossible or would require years of work and when they found out, they changed their minds.
