Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • HowardW (2/24/2012)I'm not convinced these things are a massive opportunity to learn new skills in details,

I think it depends on the presentation you go to and the skill of the presenter. At the last SQL Bits Maciej Pilecki gave a talk on the Query Optimizer and it was amazing. However, a colleague of mine went to another talk on the same day and was severely disappointed - there were more personal anecdotes than actual useful content.

I don't think l would go to a Saturday session again though, as it was just bun-fight - far more people than it could comfortably cater for.

  • Oh yeah, that was fun.

@GilaMonster, so you don't have your own experience - you just read some posts about some guys, right?

    Oh well, we tried.

I haven't been on these things in a while. I was REALLY hoping that Cel-BLOW had disappeared. Wishful thinking on my part.:angry::angry::angry:

Edit/addendum: I apologize everyone. I had to get that out of my system.

    But I'm REALLY sick of Celko's bullsh-t.

I've been to two SQL Server Saturdays in Boston now and both have been fantastic. I got some in-depth information from some talks, an introduction to areas I hadn't touched in others and quick useful ideas in most. It all depends not only on the speakers, but also the organizers and the people putting the ones together in Boston (I haven't been to any others) both get great speakers and organizers and pay attention to attendance, site capacity and catering. I spent my birthday at last year's and it was a great birthday.

It was a pleasure getting to meet you too! That's the other thing I loved about the SQL Server Saturday, getting to meet you, Jack, Paul and lots of other people both from here and that I'd never heard of before, but we all have an interest in learning and in SQL Server. It is really nice knowing there are other people out there who care about getting it right.

Is anyone else having trouble getting to topics they've responded to in the past couple of days?

I just tried to check a couple of topics via the notification link and was informed that the topics were deleted or I didn't have permissions for them. And these are valid topics, not spam.

One thing both topics have in common is that the replies I got came from user ybz199009 (which turns out to be a spam member according to a search). Did the topics get nuked when the user was nuked?

It's just that user's post, not the whole topic that's gone. I've had that happen too - same user. I've been so completely brain dead the last few days (example of what happens when you try to get too much done on too little sleep) that I got *really* confused by that happening - but I'm blaming the confusion on really, really need a solid 12 hours or so glued to my pillow.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I know how it feels to have someone treat you as if they assume you're an idiot because you post something they either disagree with or because you're just brain dead at the time.

As a counterpoint to that experience, remember that most of the folks who responded to your question were helpful. Just like I was lucky yesterday when my brain stopped working on the 6th condition in a proof of concept I was working on and I decided to post a request for help. I had what I consider "normal" for SSC - nice, friendly folks, who didn't tell me to redesign a database that I can't redesign, or ask me why I was being an idiot because I just hadn't thought about joining one of my tables back to itself instead of the fairly clunky and ugly cross join I'd been working with. But I honestly thought twice about posting, because I was half expecting someone to explain to me that I was <insert derogatory statement here>.

Remember - *most* of the folks here are trying to help - and usually do a good job. We have a community of people here that go out of their way to provide assistance, even when it's the same question over and over and over again. That *more* than makes up for the problem children, in my opinion.

Looks like you just joined the choir! So are many of us.

  • Quite an interesting day. I gave my two weeks notice and was basicly told that I would not need to come back. Not that I don't mind, it means not having to drive to Denver for the next two weeks, but now I need to see if my new employer will be able to let me start early. I was going to start on March 12th, but now I'd like to start sooner if I can.

Any way, I was offered and accepted a new position with a company in Colorado Springs. It is a full time permanant position so I won't have to carry insurance via Cobra any more. YEA!!

Then, in response, he brow beats some more. His online persona really needs to grow up.

    Congrats!

In the past when I put in my notice and was told not to come back, I got the two weeks of pay anyway. Is this a consulting gig?
