  • Question for those of you who have organised SQLSaturdays

Would you have been irritated if your regional mentor or an organiser of another SQL Sat in the same area had started doing stuff (like mailing sponsors) on your behalf without asking or informing you beforehand.

    Not sure if I'm over-reacting.

Yeah, probably. We had a sponsor who wanted to get listed, but didn't want to pay for it, so that sponsor started contacting other sponsors, including ones we were already talking to, in order to raise money for us in lieue of payment. Took a little back & forth before it was all worked out appropriately. I wouldn't want anyone contacting others without at least checking with me first.

Not a sponsor, but in my capacity as a writer...

Yes. EDIT: Umm.... I mean, yes, I'd be irritated. Not "yes, you're over-reacting."

The only time someone can do something "on my behalf," like promotion, is because they have a contract or a verbal agreement with me stating that they can. I want people to ask before they put my name on anything because it's my reputation at stake, not theirs. If something goes wrong, they aren't the ones getting in the hot seat.

Yes, extremely irritated. What would be this person's reasoning for contacting the sponsors?

He decided that he'd help out since he's organised a SQL Sat recently.

He's actually put me and my co-leads in a rather nasty position by contacting potential sponsors (we can't accept cash donations as the usergroup is not a registered entity and all of the leads would have to pay tax on any donations we receive because of certain tax structures here), not to mention that my co-lead and I have better contacts with some of the companies (like MS and RedGate) than he does.

Let him know you appreciate the attemp to help, but that it would be better to coordinate it before-hand next time.

Don't be irritated by it, just try to channel his enthusiam and control it a bit. You don't want to cut the desire to help, just the get it directed better.

One of the easiest ways to really piss people off is to reject offered help or "hit back" at attempted help. Everyone on this thread has seen that in the forums, or been a victim of it. So you don't want to do that. But do take control of it.

I agree with Gus. It seems, at first blush, that he's just being eager and not thinking about the consequences. Don't be irritated, but do sit him down, explain the situation, then let him know you'll need his help reconnecting with those he's contacted and explaining that he jumped the gun and this is the proper way to help out.

  • Two things.

    1) Anyone here besides me using Google+?

    2) WordPress gurus, I'm recreating my website with the WordPress content manager and wondering if I can separate my writing blog and my SQL blog and have links that point to both. How easy or hard do you think that would be?

  • Yes - Many of us are using G+

    I'm using Google+

I have multiple WordPress blogs (which I haven't updated in awhile). I just set up multiple instances and use each for a different topic. It was very easy.

    1. I'm on G+ but don't really use it. Mainly because I like TweetDeck. If I could add a G+ column or columns to TweetDeck I'd probably use it more.

    2. I'd be interested in that as well as I'm considering moving WordPress as well and would like to do something similar. I have a domain and I'd like to have a couple of blogs hosted under the same domain like domain/sql and domain/personal, etc...

Is "Multiple Instances" the keyword I should use when searching through the help files?

That might work. Multiple Blogs or Multiple Installations might work too. If you'd like, I can see how I have it set up when I get home. It was pretty easy if I remember correctly, you just have to set up a directory for each one and do an install into it.

    For example, I have

My SQL and other coding blog: http://sqlserver.thoughtstream.com/

    My Cooking blog: http://cooking.thoughtstream.com/

    My Comics blog: http://comics.thoughtstream.com/

    My Music blog: http://music.thoughtstream.com/

I have others, but I haven't really posted anything on them yet. Heck, I haven't posted anything about music on my music blog yet. I've been utterly swamped with other things recently, but I do mean to get back to them all.

Also, is that the kind of addressing you are looking for Jack?
