  • Couple of weeks back I told you all that I got a great review from work. Now they have changed my role. They want me to manage more things than just the DB.

    I am not sure I am liking this new role. In this role, I get 10% time to work on DB and the rest is spend on meeting. πŸ™

    How does everyone else handle this situation?

    Let them know you're not happy with the change of role and see if they'll work with you on it.

    Managers tend to spend a lot of time in meetings. Nature of the beast. Is that what they're promoting you to?

    Might I suggest gently and carefully. Evaluate the meetings, and determine if anyone invited but does not attend some specific meeting is he/she critized for not doing so. Agreed that is easy to say and may be difficult to ascertain. But it may give you a path to follow.

    Alternatively sit down with your boss and again gently and carefully ask for advice. Now everyone loves to give advice (witness this post, am I not doing just that?). In the discussions with your boss, you could point out that your DBA duties may interfere with meeting attendance and how should you handle that situation.

    Again consider is your new position a step up the management level, and the opportunity for further advancement and commensurate increases in salary. It could lead to a brighter future, and a higher standard of living. So you need to do a great deal of soul searching and discussion with your most important partner (your family).

    Again the flip side, to ask to return to being just a DBA, it might mark you as a "non player" one not interested in doing what is best for the company. A mark that will definitely be a black mark and forever bar you from advancement, and any significant increases in income.

    Roy I know that this may not assist you at all, but rather make it more difficult for you to make a decision, and for that I apologize in advance.

    If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

  • Good advice from Ron. I might also say give it a chance, and let some of the DBA stuff go. Or let it happen slower. They may decide to move you back a bit, but I wouldn't end up working 20 more hours a week and trying to handle both jobs.

  • Just my 2p. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago and thought I'd miss having my head stuck in code/administration 8 hours a day and that I'd lose my technical skills/they'd go out of date.

    I gave it a go anyway as the pay was a lot better and to get more involved in shaping strategy and I'd probably never go back. I find it quite rewarding to only dip in ocasionally and instead, get involved in shaping all the business requirements and directing my team to follow best practice.

    If anything, I get more time now to concentrate on future technologies as I'm constantly looking at how to deliver stuff from a higher level, rather than being prescribed a platform/architecture from someone else.

    I think you've already gotten some great advice. I think you have to determine where you want to go with your career before you make any decisions. There is definitely a ceiling to how high you can go in both salary and position and still be in the technology every day, so if you want to continue to advance you may have to let go of the day to day technology side of things and start working at the management/strategic level. You really have to know what you want and then talk to your boss specifically about it. If you can't let go of the technical side, then you probably shouldn't be in the new position because you'll be miserable, but if you can embrace the new role like Howard has, then you may find out things are better.

    I know that the gurus criticize themselves for losing their tempers sometimes, so this is a good example of patience under fire πŸ™‚

    Thanks Steve. I think the OP was probably frustrated because I never really answered his question. Instead I suggested he take a different approach entirely. /sigh Oh well, I just hope I don't have to come along after and deal with that nightmare.
