I wish I could attend all the international SQL Saturdays. That would be so much fun.

I have been thinking about testing remote presentation at some U.S. Saturday's though, and expanding that as an offering to the international events if they're interested.

There is a SQl Saturday coming right next to your land mass. 🙂 Just 3 hrs flight from Miami. Why dont you aim for it? 🙂

Because apparently my car decided it wanted the flight & hotel money more than I did.

    Can you say "engine reseal"?

Me (to my car dealer repair shop): I've got this code saying I have a fuel emissions leak and I'm losing fuel efficiency. Please check my gas tank and filler tube for holes or leaks.

    Dealer: Okay

Me: Oh, and while you're at it, I have this tiny oil leak from the last time I changed my oil. Could you give my seals and gaskets a once over to verify that I don't need any new ones?

    Dealer: Got it.

    <hours later, cell phone rings>

Dealer: Good news about your fuel tank. The check engine code was just talking about an emissions leak, not anything major. When we wiped off your gas cap and reseated it, the code went away.

Me: Well, don't I feel stupid. Thanks. I'll be right in to get my car.

Dealer: Umm, about that tiny oil leak....

    I hate days like this.

Anyone can fly. You just throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Been reading Douglas Adams recently, Brandie?

Hee. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to pick up the joke.

  • Well, that explains a few things.

Humor for the day. I just gave a speech at our workplace communications club based on a blog post I did a while back. People found it entertaining and I actually convinced them of my point when I said Dave Barry has written blogs about the subject. I hope this lightens your day:

I've had that. It was followed by almost R10 000 repair bill for replacing the gaskets in the engine.

That's not "deliberately obtuse", that's good teaching.

    Ouch!

My repair will be (not counting taxes) approximately 2,200.00 U.S. dollars. Not sure how that translates with the exchange rates to how much you paid.

Yours is more. At the time it was about R7 = $1, now it's over R8 = $1. Of course, that's a literal conversion, doesn't take into account the relationship between the cost and average incomes

Be grateful they found the cause now. I reported an oil leak twice when I took the car in, they could never find the cause. It was only after I took it in for 'misfires' and erratic tick-over and stalling that they found the gasket had cracked and oil was spraying over the spark plugs. Had to replace gaskets, spark plugs, power cables and a few other things

What I'm really grateful for is the fact that my SO bugged me to ask about it. I would never have remembered it if he hadn't.

I did have a car that threw a piston once. That was ... entertaining.

Same. The hole in the block was always disconcerting when I looked at that engine. It's one of the things I think about when I'm leaning over the gas tank on my motorcycle and hoping it just takes me out quick.

When I was 19 I had a Hyundai Excel, brand new. At 30,000 miles, I pulled into a station 'cause it was overheating in February in Boston. The mechanic opened the hood and was hit in the chest with a stream of hot oil shooting out of the engine. It turns out you have to change your oil every so often! I'd been told "check your oil regularly" and I did. I added some every so often, but never had it changed.

I had to replace the engine.
