Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Dang, it was one of those days... I forgot all about my article being published today. (Time to get busy)

Does this mean you are well on your way to writing full time and forgetting all about SQL?

    HA!

    Bwahahahahahahaha.

Oh, that was a funny, if short, fantasy. Quit my day job? Leave behind insurance benefits and paid vacation / sick time? Kill my credit by not being able to pay my bills?

Hahahaha. Not unless Latchkeys catches on Harry Potter / Lemony Snicket style. Which I really think it can if we hit the market right. But it'll be years before I see a "quit my day job" kind of payout on any of my writing.

Note to self, give Brandie's book to every cousin/niece/nephew and tell them how awesome it is...

...what's the finder's fee on that type of thing? 😛

No fee, but I will buy you a very expensive dinner at the next SQL Saturday after I strike it rich. @=)

I was going to skip this, but anything that gets Gus laughing (esp maniacally) is worth taking a look at.

    This is quite good...

  • (ref. jcrawf02's post about buying the book)

That's not the way to go about it.

Note to every threadizen: if you have kids, nephews, nieces, or similar, buy corresponding number of copies of Brandie's book. Then tell each kid that you bought this book because it is very difficult to get, but it is for older kids, so they will be allowed to read it after they grow up a bit, and of course they must not tell any of their classmates.

Now that migt start a viral campaign! 🙂

You aren't the only one... my team just asked me if I was ok...

    And congrats, Brandie!

  • Somewhat off topic... I need to find a contract SSRS resource for at least a couple of months. Can anyone recommend a good place to start looking?

    Feel free to PM me.

  • I just delivered a "lunch-and-learn" to the devs where I work. Since we just upgraded to SQL 2008 R2, it was on new T-SQL features they might find useful, plus a few 2005 features they hadn't seen yet. Included Output, Merge, Table-Value Constructors, Date datatype, immediate variable initialization, and a DDL trigger that logs all schema changes.

The company paid for lunch, and I talked and showed them sample code and the results from it. About half an hour. Was fun, and everyone liked it.

Anyone else done that kind of thing? I've done longer presentations in more formal settings before, but this was really a convenient way to quickly cover an intro to a bunch of useful data.

  • We do a lot of lunch-n-learns at my workplace, but all my training has been outside of that. Usually I invite a bunch of peeps to the training room, give them access to the dev dbs and then say "Here's my SQL 101...102 class". They actually write queries in the class based on questions I give them (fake BU requirements). Not only does it give them T-SQL basics, but they learn our particular schema in the process.

    They've really liked it.

EDIT: Thank you to everyone for the congrats. I want to sell all my books, but I really really want Latchkeys to succeed so appreciate any support (including word of mouth) I can get.
