I have to say this whole situation has left me feeling extremely reluctant to post on just about anything for fear that I come across as "one of those", or maybe I am one which would be even worse. It is unfortunate that the well was poisoned. This site has been a fantastic learning opportunity for myself as well as many others.Don't fall for the trap of the troll. You, good sir, and many others that feel like you do, actually feel that way because you're one of the good ones. Compare the number of people you've helped (even if some don't thank you) and who have thanked you profusely to the uninformed accusations of a blatherskite troll who probably hasn't helped a soul in his life.
The next rain will clear the well. You just have to be careful not to piss in your own well. 😉
Thanks Jeff. I make it a point not to piss in the river I drink from, but on those rare occasions where I have no choice I do it downstream. 😛
I have no intentions of leaving or anything just saying how the whole situation rubbed me.
If you really want to see something that should have made someone leave, you should see the "wonderful" posts I got on the discussion for the running totals/Quirky Update articles I've written.
Glad to hear it rubbed you the wrong way... Like I said, things like what that troll said will always rub good people the wrong way. I bit my lip clean through when I read that thread.
And, yeah... I was worried about you leaving because of that bit of diatribe. Thanks for confirming that you're not. You would be sorely missed.
+1 Regarding what Jeff has said. I have been in simular situations but I stuck it out as well. It is hard at times, but in the end it really comes down to the people that you help.
Thanks for the kind words all. I was never even involved in the original thread but I suppose I was kind of sucked in by the troll.
Long live the mighty Troll Killers!!!
Trolls are good exp, and often have phat l00t.

Wiki's not the only site. Reddit's going dark tomorrow, so's Mozilla.
I was hoping Google/Facebook/Twitter would join in, at least the .coms.
It's a good way to protest, and show the potential impact of overly aggressive complaints by content owners and poor examination by the courts. 24 hours wouldn't kill us, and it would certainly make a point.
A couple days after MLK Day, it's almost like civil disobedience in his spirit.

Personally I just find it hilarious that the US denounces that kind of censorship in China and Iran, then considers implementing it at home. "Do what I say, not what I do" Again.
Especially when the problem they are combating, piracy from foreign sites, aren't affected by this. Sure they can prevent US citizens from getting the content in the short term, but the piracy continues for all non-US people.

Slight exaggeration, perhaps a bit of a poking by a pointed stick, but essentially correct.

There's that, and some big money at stake. Somebody is also probably up for re-election or out to make a big name for him/herself.

The House of Representatives have permanently shelved this abomination. We just need to light a fire under Harry Reid to do the same in the Senate. Might be tough. The Dems get LOTS of money from Hollywood and Hollywood really loves this horror show.
Harry Reid is the worst crack pot of the entire lot of them. It is amazing he is still in office.

Oh this is fun...

Q) What semantics or features of NTFS are no longer supported on ReFS?
The NTFS features we have chosen to not support in ReFS are: named streams, object IDs, short names, compression, file level encryption (EFS), user data transactions, sparse, hard-links, extended attributes, and quotas.
So no database snapshots and no online checkDB if running a database on the new Windows 8 file system (at least the way it currently appears)
And they're not supporting file-level encryption or compression? Really? I hope that's just a v0.1 thing. I know space is cheap and we have bitlocker, but still...

I think definition 3 of "hypocracy" is "politics or anything spoken by a politician". Might be definition 4, not sure.

I believe (sadly) that this will have no effect at all on the majority of members of either party in either chamber.
Most of the republicans will continue to support these outrageous proposals because they will do anything to upset the white house, regardless of whether it's ruinously bad for the republic or not, and most of the democrats because they are in the pockets of the plutocracy (the real government of the USA?) regardless of whether it is utterly against the interests of the American people.
Yes, the MPAA and associates have demonstrated that many American politicians are honest: once bought they stay bought.
Now I'll retire to my flame-proof shelter while all you Americans get your flammenwurfers pointed in my direction.
I guess I better see if I can sublet a corner of your shelter, since I believe much the same.

And no Sparse? That extends to SQL Server? They just added that! I have it all over my tables.

Errr... No Sparse files (which is what snapshots use).

Ah, ok, still not good, but when I see it listed like that and have no time to delve further, I had to ask.

The quote is from a filesystem-related blog, mentioning the file system features that the new ReFS won't support

I'm not sure how big the money is here. I think lots of the $$ thrown about in losses or exaggerated.

I suspect Jason was talking about the amount of 'contribution' money thrown around.
Those loss figures that get banded around are just silly. Read an article last week that investigated the origins and found that they weren't even about internet piracy, they were about counterfeit goods originally, and very, very old (fake rolexes, etc)
