Are the posted questions getting worse?

What's the general feeling about asking Steve to remove that "Question for the Experts" thread? +1 vote here.

Not our best moments, but far from useless or harmful.

No vote here, but I'm pretty sure Steve will not want to delete it if at all possible.

  • Can someone who knows more about C# help out here?

He's passing code to SQL Server and not getting things to work. I'm half out of my depth and half too busy fighting another work fire:

I was going to ask him to lock it.

Compared to that guy you are perfect model of tact and good manners and politeness - there's just no time I have ever seen a post from you that was so crassly insulting to anyone as some of the stuff I've seen from him.

edit: Is olc leam litreachadh deòradh sasunnach (I detest this alien English spelling).

I'm loathe to change that opinion of me but as a single example I was abusing every one of Celko's posts at one point, and I'm not always a model citizen. I believe a few months ago I was foaming at the mouth to verbally abuse someone here. *shrugs* Luckily some folks here see enough value in me to simply PM me when I'm getting out of hand and smack me upside the back of the head before it gets out of control. 😎

Thank you for the compliment, though. It's nice to see it's mostly working. 🙂

So, on another note... Anyone's team still in the playoffs for American Football?

    Packers! Wooo! :w00t:

If one has a vote, and all votes are equal, I would say no.

I think a lot of issues were brought to the surface with a lot of comments both pro and con. The thread will go the way of most within a few days. But some of the comments both there and here could be used as a yardstick going forwad.

edit: I haven't looked at the posting history - just the the thread referenced here and the first thread it references - so maybe I'm reacting on insufficient evidence. But if so, I'll guess that people are kicking him for previous sins, aunjustifiable on currect behaviour - and we ought to recognise that people can reform.

He was insulting someone who was trying to help him. I don't see any problem with GSquard's tone even, he was polite in asking too.

The guy was way out of line there and Gus certainly didn't do anything wrong.

However Jared was out of line in the "raiserror" thread, and if you look at that one you will see that Gus's response (here[/i]|) (which said much the same as Jared's, but said it politely) didn't get an angry reply.

Tom, is there something I'm not seeing here? Here's what Jared's response looked like:

    SQLKnowItAll (1/11/2012)

    DeanORenO (1/11/2012)

The job failure triggers an email sent to an operator which is done

I don't see the reason for this. You want your job to complete, but send an email. You should be using something like sp_send_dbmail instead of letting the job fail. A job failure should indicate a problem with the job itself or the code that a step is running. Not a problem with the data. Of course this is an opinion, but it is counter-intuitive to have a job fail when the job is doing what it is supposed to do.

Am I making sense here? i.e. If I have a job check for errors in the log, I don't want the job to fail and alert me that there are errors. I want the job to complete and report those errors to me. If the job fails, I don't assume there is a problem with the data, I assume there is a problem with the job and I look there. In this case I would think that the job was in contention with another job or that something was configured wrong with the job itself.

What if there IS something wrong with the job itself, and now you go looking at your data or the script and can't figure out the issue. This is why I think it is a better practice to separate the 2.

I'm not seeing disrespect, rudeness, et al, in Jared's statement at that point.

That is followed up by the OP stating:

    DeanORenO (1/11/2012)

I didn't explain what the whole job is about and I don't need to since the raiserror solved my problem, if the query returns rows then the job is not to send mail or do any alerts, however, if the query returns no rows then the alarm is sounded. I don't make up the requirements I just make things work based on what I'm told.

You can keep making up scenarios if you want but I'm done and you didn't help.

    (emphasis added)

From my perspective, Jared's response was reasonable, professional, and made sense, and Dean reacted rudely to it. Jared then responded to that with a bit of shock.

But I don't see where Jared was out-of-line on this.

What are you seeing as rude on Jared's part, that I'm not?

Pats fan here. I've been one my whole life even when they sucked, so I'm not a bandwagon jumper when they got good since Bob Kraft bought the team.

I don't think they are the best team left, but I think they can beat all the teams left as well as be beaten by any of the teams. I think they win any game where they don't lose the turnover battle.

I can forgive you since the Packers are an NFC team and not from NY. You need to be rooting for the Pats in the AFC though.

I wouldn't delete it. I think there is some decent discussion in there and I think it demonstrates who is and has been rude. I know that it has caused me to rethink how I post since Tom seems to think SQLKnowItAll was rude and I don't. Maybe I have come across rudely or unprofessionally in some of my posts without realizing it. If that's the only positive thing that comes out of the discussion I think it is worthwhile.
