Also, spammers seem to have changed strategy now and the add replies to existing threads instead of starting new ones.
I've noticed, plus another technique is random words (also links) in sentences, which make no sense..
eg: This is the future 'green hornet strikes' with the option of 'Save money by' random words in this 'I love sql server' and this goes on and on 'but the rabbit said "no!"'
You get the picture.

Very annoying. I think the random words are meant to trick search engines.
I don't know which countermeasures can be taken, if any. I would be extremely upset if I had to interpret hieroglyphs captchas just because of spammers.
Steve, please! :ermm:

And what does that make those of us who are following the debates about the faster than light neutrinos?I've been interested in that too... Is Einstein wrong?
No, not wrong, just incomplete (which even Einstein would likely have agreed with).
Just like Newton before him, his theory stands well in many circumstances and has been proven in many experiments (do you know that we wouldn't have an accurate GPS network without relativity or a similar theory with another name...). However there are situations where relativity breaks down (very, very, very small, and regions of incredibly high gravity), so like Newton, Einstein's theories are a partial explanation that work in many situations and don't work in others. Hence we look for new theories that can explain what happens in those scenarios where relativity breaks down (and this is where Quantum Gravity and it's related GUT candidates come up)

As a funny note, the former Italian education minister (MariaStella Gelmini) publicly congratulated with Italian and Swiss researchers that caved such a long tunnel between the two labs. :hehe::hehe::hehe:

Or maybe a few of us could be granted rights to delete the posts (or mark as deleted until Steve confirms it). It'd certainly cut on the time the spam would be visible.

maybe have the forums semi-moderated where first-time posts are vetted.

That's be a bit annoying. Most of the time we spot it instantly. Worse case it might take a few hours during the week-ends. But then we have to wait on Steve or whoever replaces him to finish the job.

I missed that memo, care to explain the funny part in this?

The site is usually pretty good at handling spam reports so my personal view is we don't need moderators, in general. Judging from an automated out-of-office email I received when reporting a post a day or so back, it seems the person responsible is on holiday until 12 January.

I suspect that the 'tunnel' in question is the LHC.

The tunnel is a fine achievement to be sure. Some regard the stuff that is in the tunnel as more impressive still.

Seems to be more than one single person. I got out of office replies from more than one person when reporting posts.
