Wasn't there a voting component to this? If so, who'd like some?

That's the whole point. Now the final 15 are known and the voting starts (continues).
Since I don't know anybody there, I don't havea clue who to help.

Same here. My #1 hope was to be on the list myself followed by having just one candidate calling the Thread "a place like home". Sad that neither one became true.

At least you could participate!!
Would have been such a slam dunk of either of Jeff, Gail or I had been the single finalist from ssc! π

I guess I know why neither Gail nor you were allowed to participate. But Jeff? I thought he'd be allowed...
I think any frequent SSC poster being among the finalists would have had a huge advantage...

I'm friends with Tim Ford. He's an MVP. He runs SQL Cruise. Great guy.
I've exchanged a few tweets with Victoria Holt. Other than that, they're all mysteries to me. Maybe the judges avoided community people? I sure don't know.

Whoa! Gail wasn't allowed to participate because of the laws of South Africa, not because of any association with this site or Red Gate. I wasn't allowed to participate because of my association with Red Gate (and they wouldn't let me participate if I quit so...). To my knowledge the only people cut off were employees and those whose legal residence didn't allow it (Tennesee residents for example).

Tidal wave advantage might be more accurate.
Gail is from another planet. I'm from Quebec (people wanting to be another planet). So that disqualifies me only because the rules are not translated to french (like I give a FLY**g ****).
Jeff is still on another planet after DBA of the year (must have been allowed AFAIK since he's in the USA).
So I guess this sums it up pretty good :-D.

Check the rules again. There was a heck of a lot of limitations in there. I know how hard it is to comply with all the laws out there. At some point you need to say here's the exclusion list. Otherwise you spend more money on lawyers than on the big prize.

Just to avoid any misunderstanding or misinterpretation: when I said "I guess I know why..." I referred to the official rules and nothing else. Hence my question regarding Jeff since I assume he's a U.S. citizen living in MI with no official association with Red Gate (therewith being qualified).

Sorry, you're right. There are a bunch of exclusions, but they're pretty clear. There wasn't a hit list is all I meant. Friends of Red Gate and Threadizens were able to participate (barring exclusion due to some other issue, like Tennessee).
