Are the posted questions getting worse?

My wife and I are celebrating our 21st anniversary today. As part of that, I'm taking next week off of work (my third vacation since 1988), and probably won't be around SSC much during that either.

Should be back to my usual schedule of inanities, non-sequiturs, and politically inappropriate comments, Monday after next.

Gail, while I'm gone can you keep an eye on database corruption forums and related material? Oh, and can you do the same while I'm here, too? And if I'm here, but not paying attention? Or if I'm here, paying attention, and posting junk? Or ... 😛

    1. Get some thinking time in 😀

    2. You were supposed to ask everybody to post non-sequiturs, monitor the junk, etc etc etc;-)

    Congratulations. 21 is pretty good.

Today's nugget of wisdom - when computer is giving all sorts of drive-related errors, first check that the sata cables are properly seated, especially if the computer has been recently moved.

I lost half the morning to what I thought was another drive failure, turned out the be a loose SATA cable. Now makes me wonder about the 'faulty' drive that I replaced a couple months ago as the symptoms were much the same.

Wouldn't that just suck. You don't still have the drive by chance?

I do still have it. Once I get the server installed I'll stick it in there to test (only got 1 of the intended 5 drives for my server due to the HD shortage). If it works fine, then I'll use it as a new games drive in my desktop. Just need time to take the desktop down for a full day to clone the drives (clonezilla is a new favourite tool)

In that case - bonus if it works. I need to try clonezilla.

Been there, done that. Though it was IDE instead of SATA way back then.

But all I have to do to make my ego feel a little less bruised when I do something like that, is remember the time we got a support call about a new computer system that was "broken" when it was shipped to a remote office a couple thousand miles away. It had tested fully functional before shipping. No amount of over-the-phone troubleshooting was solving it. Ended up flying a tech out to that office. He found out, after several hours of work and questioning people, that they had plugged it in to an outlet that they already knew didn't work.

  • Gus, Congrats on 21 years. I have a few before I hit that.

I think you need to take more vacations or at least time off.

My favorite is when I got a call about the terminal not working in the waste water treatment plant at the paper mill I worked at. The entire mill was down for maintenance so the power was off in the entire facility. They just assumed that the computers would still work. :w00t:

I had one once where it was a new PC and the user had decided to change the wiring. Removed the grounding prong because he only had two prong outlets. Then just plugged two wires direct into the outlet (skipped the prongs). Good times!!

    I need to try clonezilla.

It's a lovely tool. I used it a while back to replace a boot drive with a much larger drive. Cloned the old drive onto the new, switched them around and booted the machine. Windows didn't even notice it was on a new drive, no driver installations, no safe mode, booted clean on the new drive first time.

  • Slick - definitely moving up higher on the list of software to use.

  • I was cursing a printer a couple years ago, maybe 5, and checking settings, looking for drivers, etc. After 30 min, my wife asked me if I'd checked the cable.

    RS-232 loose.
