  • Spent awhile today unable to do anything on a server connected through a Remote Desktop. Everything was fine when I used my machine, but if I tried to type on the Remote machine, it thought I was holding the windows key down on my keyboard. Try holding down the windows key and quickly typing index or alter and see what happens.

You mean with holding down the Windows key? Most keys just open Windows Explorer, but many do at least something. I tried all the keys in combination with the Windows key back when Vista came out, none do anything harmful, but I've used Windows + e ever since to open the file system and Windows + l is better than ctrl+alt+del for locking your machine.

Oh, and I should mention that I found I was having the problem when I was trying to add a condition to an existing query. I went down below the WHERE statement and typed

    and

Try that with the window key, it was a real WTF moment.

The fun part was that the a and n don't do anything, so I didn't know anything was wrong and all of a sudden everything is minimized!

Reminds me of when I played a trick on a friend back in wordperfect 5 when I hit alt F3 (or whatever opened a new blank document).

Ah the look on his face for 10 seconds when he thought he had lost 30 minutes of work ;-).

That's also when he learned to save every few minutes :-D.

    A valuable lesson indeed 🙂

It is funny how keyboard shortcuts can baffle people. I was talking someone through writing a query in SSMS and finished with "now hit F5" and they kind of freaked out when the query started running.

That's one reason I love SQL Prompt, with matched keys. "ssf" for SELECT TOP 10 * FROM for me, also "ct" for create table.

EEEK! I just sold another story. Happy happy.

Now I have to write more.

Awesome! Congratulations. (Sorry, I'm catching up on the thread, but this was too good to pass up)

I'm catching up too; lost a few packets. Congrats! That is awesome.

Hey Brandie, are you attending/speaking at the SQLSaturday in Tampa? Maybe we can finally meet then (if my session on AlwaysOn is selected).

And I shall now facepalm in a mirror. I tried to fix everything BUT the (now) very obvious oops at the beginning.

I wish I could, but I think I'm out of town that weekend (which is what happened with me on this past Orlando SS). I need to double-check the dates.
