So, it dependsSomeone so needs to come up with an interview question where this is the exact answer that's needed.
Isn't that pretty much every interview question relating to SQL Server?
No - i have some very specific questions about query plan operators.
Ask one. I bet I can start an answer with 'it depends'...
What is the capital of Alaska?
Oh wait, you meant for query plan operators.
What is this query plan operator?
Looks like a tetris block to me.

It depends. It could be a hash join, hash aggregate, flow distinct, or a union...

It depends. Most would say Juneau, but this could be a trick/lateral-thinking question, in which case the answer would be 'A'.

But the physical operator is a hash match which can be used to accomplish all of the above. So I would have gone with hash match. Now had you asked me what it can be used for I would have only known the join part.

Yeah me too (on the physical operator), but I did promise Jason an 'it depends' answer 🙂

It depends....
....on whether I'm allowed to call a slightly dishonest DBA a query plan operator.
Looks like a DBA tring to cheat at Towers of Hanoi. I guess that makes him a bit of an operator, and he deals with query plans (when not cheating at simple games) so he's a query plan operator.

Please do. It's an excellent resource for troubleshooting (and if you read the forward, I'm not the only one that thinks that) 😀
