Are the posted questions getting worse?

Work just got us all online training from PluralSight (which I've never heard of before). In looking at the SQL Server items, there are some from an author of the name "Dan Sullivan" doing mostly Beginner level courses. Does anybody know anything about this guy, and whether his courses are worth doing?

Some of the developers here have used Pluralsight to get up to speed on the Entity Framework and some other topics and seemed to think they are ok. I didn't take any of the SQL stuff so I can't speak to that, they sent us to PASS Summit and I was happy with that.

Thanks for your replies. The fact that he co-authored a book with Bob Beauchemin does help things a little bit. Still wondering just how much use these courses will be.

I've never heard of Dan Sullivan, but I have done a couple of PluralSight courses. They aren't bad. The EF stuff by Julie Lerman is really good.

The thing you have to remember is that it is mostly beginner type stuff. Most of us won't pick up a lot unless it is about something new to us like for me data warehousing and SSAS, anything would be good.

  • Also, I've got about 6 weeks left on my current contract, so I'm starting the process again. Not really worried about finding something, but if anyone has any recommendations I'll take them. Southern NH and north eastern MA. For Stefan stuff north of 128.

I didn't know of that site, so thanks for bringing it to our attention. The rates for individuals for that site look quite good, so I might give it a try. I've used SSWUG quite a bit of late http://www.sswug.org/upcoming/, but they are more expensive. On the plus side they have courses by Kalen Delaney and suchlike. I've watched a couple by Eric Johnson which have been quite good, but I wish he'd rehearse beforehand a little more. Some segments can just be 10 minutes of watching him trying to get something to work that he could have made sure of before the recording.

  • I'm trying to find out what a support service is doing for some databases that another group here uses. We got a response that they haven't done run any index defragmenting jobs, they just have one that sees if an index needs to be rebuilt and does the rebuild if it does.

Am I over-reacting or does that sound like someone that doesn't really know what they're doing?

That guy certainly doesn't know what he's doing. I'd ask to see the job(s).

I've had a couple of databases where I didn't bother with index defrag. But they were ones where single-row seeks on bulk-loaded data were the only uses of the data. Rebuild after each nightly load, and don't bother with defrag.

That doesn't sound like what you're talking about though, so I'll have to go with "sounds suspiciously like 'doesn't know'".

Defrag? I don't need no stinking defrag!

Pff, I bet there are lots of things we agree on. Especially when it comes to SQL Server and work. It just seems easier to focus on the differences. They're more obvious for one thing. : -)

Actually, I accidentally quoted that post first when I posted about Stefan and I agreeing on something. Then realized how incredibly insulting that could be if read the wrong way, and changed which post to quote to make it more clear what I was agreeing with.
