Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • I'm definitely an Apple guy overall. I love my iPhone and the iPad is nice, but I found I needed more than a tablet. Went with an Air, and all the natural scrolling gestures are really nice for me.

Plus I can cut down my traveling weight quite a bit with that machine. Still don't have all my VMs working over there, but I expect the next trips to LA and Vegas to be all Apple hardware.

  • BTW, in my last presentation on Friday I was trying to give a brief overview if indexing and testing. Not enough of a detailed explanation according to Gail as she was trying to throw a shuriken, or rubber duck, or something at me.

I was sitting with Jeff. What do you think I was throwing? 😉

Sheesh, I should have known why Jeff was there. That was frozen meat I was dodging

Heh... nah... you're a good friend... so I thawed the chops for ya. 😛

I have to admit... you tried to pack a whole bunch of stuff in that one presentation. It's a difficult thing to change, though, because the 10 items you covered are absolutly essential to the items I think every good DBA should know. You really can't cut back on the 10 items because the presentation would lose a lot of meaning but there's not enough time to cover the any of the "more difficult" items in the detail they deserve like the backup/restore thing where two files were accidently backed up. That one fellow got confused simply by the speed of the presentation and chewed up a bunch of your time with questions.

I missed the very beginning of the presentation so I don't know if you advised/stressed to the audience something along the line of "This is an overview of 10 essential items necessary to being a good DBA and none of the methods are going to be covered in sufficient detail to make you an expert on any of the items. Further independent study on your part is definitely required."

Heh... I was there to get smarter... and, like Grant would say, just being in the same room with you two folks can easily cause that to happen.

And even de-boned and par-cooked em to be really nice.

That was just for the 'if the query is 40% of the cost it will take 40% of the time of the batch' comment. One thing that I emphasised in all of my sessions this year is that query costs aren't times and aren't always right and that 40% of the cost of the batch does not mean 40% of the time of the batch

  • BTW, I've just been deleting Thread emails for the last week. It was easier than trying to keep up. Did I miss anything big? Marriages, deaths, taxes, who won the Exceptional DBA of the Year award?

  • Oh, nice.... After pointing out that performance is not the main reason for partitioning.

    GilaMonster...Really I wonder from your comments ..!!!!!!

Please read more about schema partitioning + SQL Alerts+ benefits of each one + Relevant Cases studies

Should I quote from KT's partitioning whitepaper, KT's partitioning notes from immersion or a SQLPass presentation?

I had a look at my copy of Deep Dives 2 last night. Rob signed it "Gail, it's left-to-right. Love Rob"
