Ok to bring this back on topic.

I'm eyeing a contract opportunity to work for a payment processing firm. I'd be team lead + perf tuning.

No my concern is that this is obviously a multi TB env. My biggest dbs were always quite small (200 GB, biggest tables 50 M rows and 4-5 GB of data).

So while I'm not completely adverse to large DBs, I'm wondering (again) if I might be bitting off too much on this one.

I am sure you will handle it fine. If I am able to handle a 600 GB DB, I am sure you will be able to manage TB of data. The basics are still the same whether it is a small DB or if it is a VLDB. 🙂

Thank all for the vote of confidence. I guess that's why I learn so much, never 100% sure I know enough :-D.

I've spent my entire career trying to take jobs I don't think I'm quite qualified for, that gives me room to grow and makes me much less likely to be bored.

Out of curiosity - how should we pronounce your last name? I want to pronounce it like Krzyzewski. Maybe we call you DBA K:-D

Man, I got those nicknames all my life because people couldn't pronnounce it. When I was at a track meet in high school, my turn came up and I heard the guy say

    Stefan Krz

    Stefan Kri

    Hey Alphabet, you're up!

The easiest way to explain it is Chris Wiki. Make the "S" in Chris sound more like a z and you've got it.

Remi wasn't too far off then. A lot more straight forward than Coach K.

My dad was a High School art teacher. For 40 years kids called him "Mistah K"

I'm glad we're not going with DBA K, leave out the space and it looks like a Kirby character. (from DC comics back in the 70s)

Sounds to me more like DB Ache 😀

That'd explain why I'm getting bored here doing report and looking at <no problems, ever> in the current maintenance jobs.

I liked it a lot better when I didn't know as much. Know I'm more afraid to try things because I know all the things I could screw up. When I was ignorant I just tried things because I didn't know what I could have broken.

While you're at it, is the "f" in Stefan pronounced "f" or "v"? I've heard it both ways with that or the "ph" spelling.

Even te guy that wrote the code doesn't have that.

I'd love to interview with the firm's recruiter just to see him argue that requirement :-D.

It is pronounced with the "f" and the accent on the first syllable. STE-fan.

Excellent! That's how I've been pronouncing it.

Can't say the same for your last name. I've been getting that one wrong, but can now fix that. (I hate my American tendency to mispronounce any name much more complex than "Smith".)

Which drove me nuts with a guy who insisted his name (Bob Smith) be pronounced Robert (Frech-ish, like Colbert) Smythe. Yea yea I know, it's his name, but still.

I've spent my entire career trying to take jobs I don't think I'm quite qualified for, that gives me room to grow and makes me much less likely to be bored.

You shouldn't take those jobs on - they are too easy for you :-D. Do as I've done since 1978 and take on only jobs that your are absolutely unqualified for - you learn more that way, and build a reputation a lot faster too :-).
