So where is everybody? No messages over the weekend and only 2 today?I know the Summit isn't for a few more weeks so that can't be the reason. SQLRally Nordic isn't going on now is it?
Aw, man! You woke the crickets.

Sorry. The Thread keeps me entertained when I wait on a process to finish at the office. Plus, when there is no activity I worry about the other Threadizens.

Since I haven't done those activities in many years I can't relate anymore. I spent most of the weekend working because a client had major problems on Friday and I was trying to help them solve them. Of course they were off doing their own thing as well, so much of what I researched and learned was wasted on them, but valuable to me.

Boy I must be on of the few conservatives on here...the amazon article was thought provoking but I find the author's stance does not align with my own. By his line of thought companies achieve better results when economic decisions are guilt-driven instead of by self-interest. There is a lot of guilt laden verbiage in that article that demonstrates it is more shock value than factual.

euhm did you know the SQLEngine now performs checkpointing by database ? ( apparently ever since SQL2005 )
Which db would you need to checkpoint (flush) for the sqlserver errorlog to be able to cycle ?
master only or would it need all db to be flushed ?

The SQL error log has nothing to do with checkpoints. It's not even stored in a database. (for good reason, SQL needs to write to the error log before it starts any of the databases up.)
To cycle the error log
EXEC sp_cycle_errorlog

Then how does one explain a errorlog not to cycle for 10 days after the exec sp_cycle_errorlog and doing just that after a checkpoint on all databases ??
Do you happen to know how I can copy/paste a link to twitter.
@sql_r posted a tweet on #sqlhelp
#sqlhelp error log won't recycle, same as goo.gl/jDcha. ran sysinternals, sqlserver.exe has 2 open handles. any fix? thanks.

to which I eventually replied to try checkpointing sqlserver. Apparently that did the trick for him.
( btw I hinted checkpoint because that had done the trick for me a couple of year ago and was recorded in my little checklist 😎 )

No idea. I'd have to examine the situation further before coming to any conclusions.
The error log is not part of any database, hence a checkpoint can't affect the error log directly. The error log is in a series of text files. All a checkpoint does is write the dirty portions of the data files to disk. Messages in the error log go directly into the file (I've used text editors before to watch the error log change).
It could be there were other factors involved. Some unknown factor was preventing a cycle and the checkpoint removed that factor. Without examining the situation, can't say.

Sunday may very well have been the best day in my life so far, but it didn't involve anything that would make sense in The Thread.

It's a pretty fair bet that some people would assume I'm a pretty rabid conservative. On the other hand, there are plenty who think I'm a radical liberal.
I disagree with the author of the article about a bunch of things, and am pretty sure it's "spun" (I'd use the word "lies", but it's not PC), but I would agree with Steve that unfettered materialism is just as much of a problem as total authoritarianism.

No I have never worked a production line. I am however not unfamiliar with hard labor. I am in fact in my second career because I decided I didn't want so much physical labor anymore. I was previously a chef, which is certainly a young person's job unless you go the executive route which I had no desire to do. I like to keep my hands in things and pushing pencils to do executive work is not my thing.
