I have posted one other topic and had a fantastic response from Jeff Moden and figured this is the best place to find the absolute final word on best practice approaches. I will certainly be more diligent about forming my question the next time around.
Hey, my wife is an ordained Soto Zen Priest and she hits students with sticks when they screw up.
Oh, Jeff is someone I think is smart, but donot tell him that.

I meant stop the press, Joe CELKO actually made a compliment, ONLINE. I guess that's even better than super duper DBA of the year.

Boy, I tune back in after a brief outage and the whole world is upside down.
Y'all are speaking French, working in Oracle and Celko is offering not-in-person compliments. Huh? And where's Gail? Is she not keeping you guys in line?
<scratching head>
Celko has a few talks at our SQLSat97 here in Austin in 1.5 weeks. I have never met him in person even though we literally live in the same town. Should be fun. Can't wait to see Connor Cunningham's discussion. Oh, and my first SQLSaturday presentation. Denali AlwaysOn.

...My mother in law just died last night. Been a rough few weeks. She was old and in a nursing home for a while, so it was expected. Still not fun though.
My condolences. Keep in mind, NOW is the time your family needs you most.

Apologies in advance for the change in topic... πI want to do a presentation for the SQL saturday that will be conducted in Curacao. Can I have some suggestions on what topic I should do? DBA tracks are what I know better. π
Basics for indexing. Why your query needs indexes and what it may use them for (not only to support your where clause )
I've spend a series of full day info sessions ( I don't like calling it lessons ) providing an overview do devs for the major things I would like my devs would know.
In many cases, the indexing part was quit an eye opener.
Same goes for loop/cursor avoidance.
Same goes for "first steps with sqlplans" With of course a ref to the great (e)book Grant wrote on that topic.;-)

That sounds pretty funny. I'd think if it were really the best, the consultant would be able to say "Oh, you just have this configured wrong, let me show you."Let me show you????????
You must be kidding. An Oracle consultant doesn't teach. If it was easy you would be doing it right.
What happens at best is: "You're a clueless idiot. Let me fix it."
After two or three days everything is just as broken as before, you owe him β¬ 6,000 and you're a clueless idiot.
And that is accepted by their consumers !
These consultants even get uncomfortable if you pop up a "why".
(because in many cases, the've just seen others doing that and causing the wanted behaviour)

I'd like to know if mor than 10% of the people actually read the sig.
And from that, if anything over 5% actually understand french.
Well, I don't understand French, but I do read sigs... and usually determine that google translate is my friend when I'm trying to figure them out.
It doesn't like Gaelic much, though...
