Hey guys (als), I just got a bank offer for a 70% / 30% sql svr / oracle environement.
Now all I know about Oracle is how to speel it (and barely at that).
How hard is it to pick it up on the spot? The job seems to range from installing, to configuring, perf tuning to HA on both platforms.
Sounds like a lot to pick on the spot without and excellent mentor or full 100% responsibility split.

We are getting close. Who will be the lucky winner making the 30,000 post to The Thread???Don't you think that posting both 29,999 and 30,000 was naughty, Remi?
Yup, just as planned...
or actually to happen to be in front of the computer just as there was only 2-3 posts left to do :hehe:.
I had that planned too. :hehe:
AND I was in front of the computer at the right time - just looking at another thread, or maybe at the bottom of a glass. It makes little difference which - except that if it was the bottom of a glass of Bruaichladaich I at least have a decent excuse for ignoring the thread just at the critical moment.
But as I'm either a mouse or a man, no matter how well planned the plan went agley.
(WTF - if I'm going to post things like that I may as well add the Gaidhlig back to my sig - after all, how many recognise that reference?)

If the post count is still correct, your latest reply was #30001. That makes St. Lynn "the lucky 30k"!
In that photo the original post does not count as a reply (search for threads with 0 replies...).
Oops!! You're right. Again. :crying:
Congrats! I hope you'll find some sleep after such an achievement! 😎
I told you guys before, the Force is strong with THIS ONE. Resistance is futile and Adrienne!. Something along those lines.
Still a few more posts to make sure Steve gets his wish of 300 replies before he comes back :hehe:.

It's more than 20 years since I worked with Oracle. Back in those days, it wasn't too hard - but the big problem you had was that they were absolutely paranoid about telling you anything about their system, in case it gave away some intellectual property that they could otherwise have exploited (this of course rendered their technical support completely useless to anyone whose problem wouldn't be solved by going through the "have you remembered to switch on the power supply" and so on litany) - it really was crazy, if they are still like that I wouldn't touch it with a long pole. Despite that, it was when I worked with it an extremely well constructed system (compared with its contemporary competition) and had some advanced capabilities (that's why I was working with it) which were way ahead of anything else commercially available; maybe they like everyone else have moved on since then, but what I read in the trade press is that they haven't - they are still so paranoid that they won't tell their customers what they need to know in case it lets some trade secret out of the bag.

And more importantly that I am now BACK in the SQL Server world. Oracle is the dark side, things we can easily do in SQL Server are not that easily done over there. Not only that the Oracle community for the most part is very stingy with their knowledge. It is nothing like the SQL Server community where we welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with others.

I wonder if SSC DBadmins have taken performance precautions for such atypical rare threads ?
Could this already mess up query plans or be of any other concern ?

IMO that tells more about the people than the engine of their concerns.
It's a cultural problem, just like the fact companies accept to spend more budget to that software to twist some nuts and bolts.
I love our community, but I'm jealous about that kind of easy budget !

Here I'm assuming that I'll be working side by side with at least 1 other oracle DBA. So my assumption is that I have someone to fall back on & to teach me the basics.
With that in mind, is it on the not too utopic side of things?
