Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Gianluca Sartori (9/12/2011)

I re-read my reply and I see that it violates the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" rule.

Steve, can you delete the "sandbox" thread for me?

I don't think there's anything in there that violates terms. It's a judgement call on "nice", but I'll take a look again if you want. Can you repost the URL? (apologies, lots of threads here and I can't find it off the top of my head)

No, I'm sure it does not violate the terms: I'm not sure that I want my name on that thread, though.

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

  • I am not sure why any one should even bother talking about that guy... Ignore him and help the OP is the best way to solve it I guess. If you try to respond to him it will just get you into a bad mood. Why raise your BP for someone like him ? 🙂

Now back to the topic, I am building a desktop for myself with Inter Core i7 (3.87GHz Turbo Boost) Quad Core processor. The Video card is a GeFirce GTX 560. This is going to be one good desk top 🙂

    Why go so slow?

I'd personally go with xeon quad octocore with 64 GB ram (32 bit os for sure :-D).

That way I could sure the web and play solitaire without waiting! 😛

I was tempted to go for that configuration but I guessed that this processor would do nicely to open notepad and check my email at the same time. 🙂

Not too sure about that. With all those dbs in notepad & foxpro, 32 GB of ram does not look like overkill!

The last sentence says it all about his attitude[/url]

Gianluca's new sandbox is too funny!

Yeah, it's funny. But in the thread where he pointed to it Celko had been responding to comments made, and bits of his responses were not altogether unreasonable, so on that thread the joke was probably inappropriate. I sort of feel that the joke is maybe tending towards being close to as tasteless as Celko's worst comments. The SP in question looks like something that ought to have got its author fired, and I don't think any of Celko's comments about that SP were OTT. I often disagree with him, and I usually don't like his style, but I restrict myself to arguing with him reasonably, not pushing pointles ad hominem jokes his way.

The best way out for the original question would be to get hold of a good clear natural language description of the SP's function - that would almost certainly be easier than working out what on earth that awful code is doing.

I see your point, Tom, and I respect your opinion.

I don't understand why Celko keeps posting on these forums. It is completely obvious that he doesn't want to aswer the questions, so why take the time to post?

Self promotion? Uncontrolled bragging? Attract everybody's hate to feel a poor victim?

I don't know. Anyway, he's not here to answer questions or promote constructive discussions.

I read one of his books and I respect his work, but I can't stand seeing people insulted, humbled and mocked the way he regularly does.

Every time he crosses the line, dozens of people intervene to state their disagreement and the original issue gets soon forgotten. In this particular case, I found his comment at the OP saying thank you overly irritating and rude:

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post.... Feels good to be in the community where experts are ready to help out....

Actually, we like using you as an excuse to fight with each other

If provoking people to argue indefinitely is the reason why he posts here, at least let's make him do it without cluttering the forums.

Mostly I agree with you. Sometimes though he does post a useful reply, and joins in a useful discussion. Not very often - I'm generally surprised when I see him do it, and he only surprises me once or twice a year. In this particular case I don't think he was actually helpful but I did think he was less harmful that his usual (no great achievemnet, that, of course) and even thought the line that provoked you was pretty OK (I might almost have said it myself).

I think the hard drive failure's worse. Cost me most of last night and a good part of this morning and I'm working on my laptop until I can find time to replace it.

Was the boot drive so (with the exception of my iTunes library which I just realised was not in my backups) there's no risk of data loss, but means machine is down until I can get the new drive in and the backup restored

That's the same frustration I imagined it would have been. I hate having a drive go down.

I'm seriously contemplating, early next year when I have some spare time again, ripping all the drives out of that machine, replacing them with 2x1.5TB and setting up a RAID 1 array between the two. Or maybe 2x750GB RAID 1 for the OS and 2x1.5TB RAID 1 for data, games, etc.

Will mean a complete reinstall of everything, so will take ages, but will reduce the chances of this happening again. It's not as if drives are particularly expensive anymore.

I need to do something like that - for the laptop. My laptops have had more hdd failures than desktops (2-0)

I enjoy building hardware but not in cases like this.

I don't mind building hardware at work, for clients, or for a new machine for home. I hate re-building due to drive failure on personal machines.

My observation is that there are lot of people posting their Homework Assignments.

It is so obvious that they are not real world problems. They are not even good homework assignments.

It must be nice to have someone jump to do your homework. IMHO this is cheating.

Yeah it is cheating. And hopefully the prof will figure it out.

It would be nice if we could get a notification of the deleted threads / posts. It'd be easier to follow / know what's going on.

If you think that my reply was not called for, I can delete my post.

Well, actually I can't, but I can ask Steve to do it for me.

If you also feel that I should apologize, feel free to say it out loud. I hate being wrong, so, please give me a chance to correct my attitude if you think I should.

ATM, I have no reason to believe so.

I don't think you should remove the post, or apologise. It wasn't the best post ever, but it was actually less bad than many that others (including both Celko and myself) have perpetrated; it was more the reaction of others too it as if it was the perfect response to the man (which, in some other threads where he's been, it could have been) that made me jump in.

  • Ninja's_RGR'us (9/12/2011)

Yes I have been rude. I've also apologized, edit and excused myself many times.

Not something Joe's been doing AFAIK.

Also while far from perfect, I don't think I have over 50-75% of my posts who could be perceived by the receiver as offensive or rude.

Just playing a bit of catch up. Remi, if Joe gets nailed, so do I. He's a snarky ***, but I've done some incredibly rude personal attacks... and I don't apologize for them when I finally get to that point. So while he's a consistent PITA, I'm afraid the pot cannot support the banning of the kettle.

Besides, really, what would be the point? Would you rather watch him take those pieces somewhere we *can't* respond, with all the bits and pieces about no temp tables and 1 page coding? We both know that's fine for juniors but once you start doing heavy lifting that's not going to go well.

So, for a different topic... Go Jets!
