    You want lousy week-end?

Try having 2K+ of unexpected repair on your car, having to lose 1 weeks income + all the trouble to be flooded by Irene while getting corruption on the boot drive of your consult PC.

Wondering was I had been gone all those days? now you know!

    Now it's sunny again .

You were gone? Thought I was seeing things from you about connect items with F5 not working in SSMS. 😛 :w00t:

I was talking about the week before that ;-).

    The unexpected can hit hard.

Windy women ... they were up north this year ... and people noticed !

Any chance you bought that pc in the same store as Gail ?

Good to see it's sunny again.

The weird thing as that these were all unconnected events and weird at that. Took a weird series on coincidence for the flooding to occur (massive rain, power failure, owner never told me about the submersible pump and he never came in to see even if he knew there was no electricity and had a generator).

I didn't fly to the end of the world, so no I didn't go to the same store as Gail's :hehe:.

  • Glad you liked it. 😉

I'm sure Mr. Celko won't understand, though.

I'm seriously contemplating, early next year when I have some spare time again, ripping all the drives out of that machine, replacing them with 2x1.5TB and setting up a RAID 1 array between the two. Or maybe 2x750GB RAID 1 for the OS and 2x1.5TB RAID 1 for data, games, etc.

Will mean a complete reinstall of everything, so will take ages, but will reduce the chances of this happening again. It's not as if drives are particularly expensive anymore.

I keep thinking to do this with my Windows Home Server. Another boot drive failed, been down a month because I'm too annoyed to replace the boot drive and reinstall everything again.

Yeah, my desktop's still down cause I just don't have the time or enthusiasm today to replace drive and restore backups and check that everything's ok, etc, etc.

I'll get to it later in the week. I enjoy building hardware but not in cases like this.

The last drive failure I had was in my file server, and that was so easy. Buy new drive, turn server off, replace drive, reboot and let the array rebuild. 10 min work and 0 data loss.

Gianluca's new sandbox is too funny!

Yeah, it's funny. But in the thread where he pointed to it Celko had been responding to comments made, and bits of his responses were not altogether unreasonable, so on that thread the joke was probably inappropriate. I sort of feel that the joke is maybe tending towards being close to as tasteless as Celko's worst comments. The SP in question looks like something that ought to have got its author fired, and I don't think any of Celko's comments about that SP were OTT. I often disagree with him, and I usually don't like his style, but I restrict myself to arguing with him reasonably, not pushing pointles ad hominem jokes his way.

The best way out for the original question would be to get hold of a good clear natural language description of the SP's function - that would almost certainly be easier than working out what on earth that awful code is doing.

I see your point, Tom, and I respect your opinion.

I don't understand why Celko keeps posting on these forums. It is completely obvious that he doesn't want to aswer the questions, so why take the time to post?

Self promotion? Uncontrolled bragging? Attract everybody's hate to feel a poor victim?

I don't know. Anyway, he's not here to answer questions or promote constructive discussions.

I read one of his books and I respect his work, but I can't stand seeing people insulted, humbled and mocked the way he regularly does.

Every time he crosses the line, dozens of people intervene to state their disagreement and the original issue gets soon forgotten. In this particular case, I found his comment at the OP saying thank you overly irritating and rude:

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post.... Feels good to be in the community where experts are ready to help out....

Actually, we like using you as an excuse to fight with each other

If provoking people to argue indefinitely is the reason why he posts here, at least let's make him do it without cluttering the forums.

I'm not sure either, and I think the best thing to do is ignore him most of the time, and deal with the OP only.

What's the reasoning behind nor firing his account?

I know he sometimes gives good content, but most of the time his posts are just rude spam.

I'm not sure the net benefit (if any) justify not killing his account from posting anymore (without deleting the rest of his posts).

I work off of an AlienWare laptop. I just found out that it supports two drives. For an employee (who need a complete install anyway), we made the drives RAID1. My own AlienWare lappy still has a single drive for now and I have the same reluctance as you to redo it.

The difference is, I HATE hardware. In fact, I define "hardware" as the part of the computer that you can kick.

I agree. Celko wasn't even being rabid about the OP on that one.

I don't think he's actually violated the EULA/TOS for the site. Till he does, the account should stand, IMO.
