Reminds me of a story about my mother-in-law. A duck was in her garden. She went to chase it away and the duck bit back. She decided a little game of golf with the duck was a better option. Fore - quaaaaaack.

    How did it taste?

Gail, since you live in Africa, I can't help but wonder if you've had any interesting animal encounters...

We don't have lions, leopards, elephants or rhinos roaming the main cities. Even the rural areas are mostly free of big game.

I guess the animals you do have in big cities are much more dangerous than any of those.

You mean the 2-legged ones, some of which tried to burn part of the CBD down earlier this week? Yeah, I'll take a lion over them anyday.

I suddenly have this image of you in the Michael Douglas part of "The Ghost and the Darkness", except wielding a laptop instead of a rifle. (Yes, we all know my mind is a strange and dangerous place.)

It's interesting that people seem to take what's been around them all their lives for granted.

I'm a music lover, and a native Memphian, but never have been to Sun Studios or Elvis' mansion. But I have enjoyed some of the local, live music over the years.

You live in Africa, and it sounds like you don't enjoy seeing the unique and wonderous wildlife there. The exotic animals are probably what I would like the most about being in Africa. (But are African animals "exotic" if you live in Africa? 'Guess not.)

Not sure where you drew that conclusion from...

The exotic animals are probably what I would like the most about being in Africa.

They're in zoos and game parks, much like anywhere else in the world.

This isn't the 17th century Africa romanticised in films. Walk around Sandton, Pretoria, Durban, Johannesburg and you'd be hard-pressed to tell that it's not a city in Europe or US (well, other than based on the people). Yes, the rural/uninhabited regions are wide-open grassland (veld), but they're not wide open grassland with massive herds of antelope or migrating buffalo or elephants. They're wide open, empty grassland (or more usually cattle or sheep farm)

Up in the central regions of Africa it's a very different story (even as close as Zambia is quite different)

(But are African animals "exotic" if you live in Africa? 'Guess not.)

Exotic: originating in or characteristic of a distant foreign country. (Oxford English Dictionary)

  • As we were getting the kids ready this am, a family of deer (buck, doe, 2 kids) walked through the front yard. The girls were fawning over them at the window.

    "Fawning" over deer, eh? 😛

I was on vacation in the country last week. Had a herd of deer come into the front yard, stealing apples and roses. Two fauns, one still in spots. Was a pretty sight.

Once, when I lived in Montana, got to watch an elk eat out of a squirrel feeder right outside the dining room window. Was probably all of 2 or 3 feet away from me, but it couldn't see in through the window because it was brighter outside than in.

So, I've probably had wildlife closer than Gail has, despite the fact that she lives in a grass hut and hasn't ever even heard of electricity or running water. :w00t:

This is the type of thing we really missed in FL. There's a big field behind my office that regularly has turkeys in it and we'll see an occasional deer. When we hopefully buy a house next year we want it to be somewhere where we can see deer/bear and other wildlife in the yard.

WOW! You guys are really modernizing at an amazing rate!

Why, next thing you know, you'll have unionized employees hired for reasons that have nothing to do with competence or trustworthiness, who can produce amazingly shoddy products and services in incredibly low quantities, for amazingly high wages! Just like a real, modern country!

I know you're not living in a rainforest over there somewhere with monkeys in the trees (much), and I actually still have most of my teeth and wear shoes (well, usually).

I was just trying to get you to talk about some of your wildlife experiences, that's all. But to you, it may be no more interesting than it is to me to talk about spotting Elvis impersonators here. 😀

  • That was the calm before the storm (Irene).

That was our 2nd storm of the century here in 6 months.
