Are the posted questions getting worse?

Well it looks like we might have an SSC party at the PASS Summit after all for those of you that are going. No deal with PASS, but we'll likely sell tickets and have fun.

    Look for some details soon.

It looks like the stars are starting to align with respect to me being able to go to the PASS Summit. My company needs to confirm that they have the money in the training budget for the conference, plus two pre-con days. Then, when presenting at a UG last night, the UG leader might forward his free ticket to me if no-one contacts him about it shortly (he can't go due to work commitments). Come on stars, just a little more alignment is needed.

Steve, you'll like this one: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1161841-391-1.aspx

We just answered a MySQL question, because the forums for that product were too hostile and unhelpful. Good PR for this site!

    *cool* 😎

Fingers crossed for you. Good luck getting the budget

    Yay!!!!!!!!!

Wouldn't be PASS without a SSC party.

Always curious when people do this (warning, grammar question ahead)

I would tend to say "an SSC party", because of they way it's pronounced as an acronym "an Ess-Ess-See party". However, some people tend to use "a SSC" because they intuit the meaning of the acronym, and since you pronounce SQL as "Ess-Cue-El", they feel this is more correct, in addition to rules about only adding the n when a vowel follows (which I guess I tend to follow from the phonetics, and not the spelling)

Or possibly, it was just el typo striking again. So, which is correct?

    *Edit: didn't actually have a question...oops

"A" vs "an" is supposed to be based on whether it's a "vowel sound", not on the actual letter. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/591/01/ has more details and examples.

  • If I'd been speaking out loud it would have been 'an'. I wrote quickly without speaking it, hence it went to 'a'

Happens all the time in touch-typing. Its one of those training-you're-fingers-to-do-what-you're-mind-really-wants things. They're are alot of common typos that follow that pattern of thinking one thing and typing an other. Especially with phonetically identical words or minor grammar points.

My worst is ending up with a period at the end of a question. I do that all the time. I've trained my hands too well to type a period, and sometimes forget to override that with a question mark. Weird, isn't it.

  • I mix up 'or' and 'of' frequently. It's a pain, as spell checkers won't catch it and frequently grammar checkers don't either as the resultant sentence is correct, just not what I intended at all.

  • Sorry to break the rules but..

I've possibly discovered a bug that corrupts your db when doing a deployment script. I've tested on 2K5 sp3 and 2K8 R2 RTM, I need more feedback for other versions (up to denali).

I don't have a test server to install anything I want so I'd love to get your help.

    http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/FindPost1161964.aspx

All you have to do is restore a db and run a test script and post the errors you get, if any.

Please post your results with the version(s) you tested on.

    TIA.

Very cool, Remi. It's not often that one can play with a "hard-break"... they always seem to be intermittent. I'll try to make some time to look at it. Thanks for posting the setup code.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
