Also, one of my larger DBA clients is doing a massive conversion from a dreaded SQL7 install (325GB DB) to a totally new vendor app, SQL2008, all new Crystal Reports, etc. A 2 year effort and the conversion finally began late in July. Wall-To-Wall meetings and activities to ensure everything is converted successfully. Man, what a huge amount of time this is. It'll be great to kick SQL7 to the curb after all these years though. Buh-bye!

That sounds like a lot of fun. I have done plenty of 2000 to 2008 upgrades. Even did 7 to 2005 and a 6.5 to 2000 back in the day.

Cases like this, I think it would make sense to get the DBs to at least 2000 compat and then go from there.

Ya, that's what we did. Got it to 2000, then up from there. Large effort to extract out the old legacy data from the old vendor db, massage it and cram it into the new version of their ODS system. Plus, keep the old system online while they 'phase' out 1/7th of the database each week. Complicated. It was originally going to be a clean cut-over while shutting down the business for 1.5 weeks. Then, in the last 3 months, they decided to keep both systems online and do 1/7th partials each week running both as production. Oh, and begin importing the new data from the new system (incrementals) each night too.

And the new ODS system only has PK's defined. No indexes since it was dev and we'd tune it with some testing 'later' - oop! Now it's production partially and will be fully production next week. Way too many queries to tune before hundreds of users cry, so we are dividing the load (I've got a staff of 4 plus me and a few 1099 contractors), plus the company's DBA dept. as well). Oh, and with a clean cut over, we'd reuse the same hardware. Oh wait, now they both need to be production (for the past 5 weeks). Where's the other server? They didn't think they needed it. After I educated them as such, there was no reaction time and no one wants to invest in temporary infrustructure. Now there is a scramble to get small amounts of hardware to scale up the existing box. Upgraded SAN with another 3TB of space, fighting with SAN folks to ensure they use RAID 10 and not 5 like they want (because they acquired an odd number of drives and want to use them all). FedEx'd over some RAM - QUICK. Surprise. Need to reboot to mount the new HBA. uh. When? System is wall-to-wall production. And on and on and on..... <drifting into the sunset>.

So what do I do at the end of this? Decide to fly to Dallas for the end of this week to help out a new <large> health care company as a brand new client. Staff is doing a great job in my absence. I'm writing this from a hotel with wifi as slow as Gail's entire country's pipe. What is it again? .25Mb down and up? Ya, that's what I'm getting.

Anyway, if I wrote an article about it, it'd be a book and about 0 people would be interested in reading it. Approximately.

You made my morning with this. I've been expecting things to simmer down for a few months now. I think I need to change my expectations! At least the busy is the good kind of busy!

One pre-con presentation, one spotlight (needs to just be extended), one book to tech-edit, 2 articles to write, maybe a lightning talk to plan and a thesis to write.

One precon presentation, one spotlight (polish, just polish), two other presentations, 1/6 through one book, 3 chapters to do in a 2nd, complete rewrite of 3rd, maybe a lightning talk and doggone it, I need to write a few blog posts. Been letting that slide.

HA! Right. I sympathize with Grant about (maybe) not wanting to add a lightning talk. I'd still go see it though!

Well, just finished 6h of being totally unproductive (sleeping). Back to work!

  • Well it looks like we might have an SSC party at the PASS Summit after all for those of you that are going. No deal with PASS, but we'll likely sell tickets and have fun.

    Look for some details soon.

I think I'll spend Monday somewhere way in the back, sitting quiet in a corner, keeping my head down :hehe: ..... Hell No. I wouldn't want to miss all the fun with the subject and I'll try to be gentle with the tutors. :hehe:

Tuesday I'll be in the powershell class ( euhm object , since a class is an object 😉 ).

I've played a bit with powershell, but there is way more to explore ... to get to a comfortable level.

We just answered a MySQL question, because the forums for that product were too hostile and unhelpful. Good PR for this site!
