Anyone want to add anything here: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1158751-10-1.aspx. Looks like the guy's making decisions for all the wrong reasons, lot of arrogance of youth there too

*sigh* I wish I hadn't actually read the whole thread. I'm in his geographical region, and in spite of his dislike for the field, was willing to help him try to find an entry-level position.

Until I read his comments about women.

    Um... just no.

He's young and male. Therefore, he's a moron. Most of us were. Some of us outgrow it... a little.

My bigger concern is that he hates technology. Good god, why do it if you just hate it. Especially if, you're actually not doing it yet. "I don't have a job in this field I loathe, how do I go about getting one." Doesn't that fall into the doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do this, category?

Oh, the hating technology part is absolutely a problem. There's no point to being in this field if you don't have a love for at least *some* part of it.

As for being young and male? That's still no excuse to talk about women the way he does. There's a huge difference between being male and being a jerk. The first condition doesn't automatically equate to the second.

Don't forget, he also wants to be a lawyer, he seems to have hit the standard jerk-level for being a lawyer.

When you encounter a problem, if the solution isn't readily evident go back to the start and check your assumptions.

On a different topic, for those that have a blog, what do you'll think of using GoDaddy for hosting a domain and WordPress blog?

What do you'll think of using WordPress for the blog?

I'm thinking about signing up for it, but wanted to get opinions from others first.

First step done: I've signed up with Arvixe for a domain name.

    Next steps...

    1. figuring out just what I want to call the blog (everyone seems to have a cute nickname). I kinda like just using my name, which lots of people also do.

    2. set up and start doing some blogging.

    3. simple web design.

Any other advice from those that have gone before me?

Brent Ozar has a good series on that from a couple of years ago. It starts here[/url].

He's young and male. Therefore, he's a moron.

My take too, and why I mostly ignored that comment. Plus for the last year I've been working with a 24 year old who seems to think with his hormones. Maybe I'm getting immune to that attitude.

Oh no, if he's 24 and still not at least starting to wake up, it might be time for a slap about the face & neck. I'm only willing to cut 21 & under ANY slack. After that, time to at least act like a man.

What's worse is he KNOWS better. He made the comment that he's thinking with a twenty-something attitude, not a forty-something attitude. If he just thought that way without justifying it to himself, then I might be more inclined to excuse it. But the fact that he knows he's doing and still does it anyway, that's what's annoying.

What about video cards? Don't forget to spec it out for hosting your games. @=)

Nah, the server's not for games (that's what the desktop and XBox are for). Server's going to be a Hyper-V host, DC and file server. Graphics card just needs to be good enough to drive the 40" TV that it's connected to, and most onboard ones will do that these days.

How about a kick in the ...? 21 and under - it would only happen in the workplace once. Some of the biggest and brightest folks in IT and in SQL are women. With his attitude, I'd have to agree with Kiara.

Since he already exposed the race card, it makes me wonder how he'd feel if he was told that people of his race should be working in the fields. IMO, same thing with what he said about women. (No, I DO NOT believe this either... just wondering how he'd feel about it.)

  • Gail,

Who do you order your servers through? What brand do you like the best for this sort of work?

  • There's a good hardware/game shop near where I live, I order almost all my hardware through them. Not quite dealer price but they're cheaper than the major retailers and the people that run the shop are very knowledgeable.

Laptops with a TB of internal storage have been available for more than 3 years now; things have moved on and 1TB internal is seen in notebooks these days, with laptops sometimes going up to 2TB internal HDD. It's even longer (about 6 years) since the AtomChip 1TB Ram and 2TB HDD laptop announcement (which I guess was a calendar error - someone thought it was April 1st).

I'd expect a server to have more storage than even a top spec laptop, so maybe 2TB is a bit small?

Not down in my part of the world. A 1TB laptop here is top of the line or imported.

In fact, looking at my usual hardware supplier, the largest drive I can find in a laptop is 500GB and that's a $4200 laptop

You'd be surprised how many people are in this boat. They often do the job because it pays more than the bills. Tech is a good living, better than most places where you might spend your passion.
