    ...

Lynn, I'm very glad that you are moving back. I know you've been a bit unhappy there (what with being so close to the Dark Side and all). Seriously, I'm glad you're getting back to something that you like a lot better. Hopefully, this will mean that you will be out here on SSC a bit more also!

Thank you Wayne, and I enjoyed your presentation tonight as well.

You know that code for concatenating strings, that was what I could not remember for the life of me when I was up interviewing for a position with Microsoft. Think you can send me that code snippet so I can put it on a flash drive for future reference?

Maybe Wayne could start that blog of his and post it there too?

Seriously, a flash drive just doesn't seem like enough sometimes for all of the scripts.

I like the pen better. It has at least 4 functions. Pen, Flash Drive, in-close weapon, and, of course, Pork Chop flinger. 😀

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

Well done Brandie. The only real author I know and we still haven't met.

I think it's hilarious that you think you're not a real author.

    You're writing, aren't you?

    You're getting published, aren't you?

You're getting paid for both, aren't you?

If not, you're doing something wrong. If so, then congratulations. That's what authors do. We write the stuff that other people sell. @=)

Tech writing is just not the same.

Correct... you have to be right in tech writing. 😀

I've read two of your books and wrote a review on one of them. Not only are you a writer, but you're a good one. Both of your books introduced difficult subjects to the reader and progressed through appropriate "revelation" so that both Neophytes and Alumni to the subject could follow along without getting lost or bored. There are few technical authors that write in a fashion where I've enjoyed "the read" as much.

And I do like the pictures in his books 😛

They even match the text 😀

On a different topic, for those that have a blog, what do you'll think of using GoDaddy for hosting a domain and WordPress blog?

What do you'll think of using WordPress for the blog?

I'm thinking about signing up for it, but wanted to get opinions from others first.

First step done: I've signed up with Arvixe for a domain name.

    Next steps...

    1. figuring out just what I want to call the blog (everyone seems to have a cute nickname). I kinda like just using my name, which lots of people also do.

    2. set up and start doing some blogging.

    3. simple web design.

Any other advice from those that have gone before me?

I don't know if there's any other option, but I'd say put your WordPress blog on a subdomain. I have mine on sqlserver.thoughtstream.com. This keeps the main site free for anything else you might want to do. I eventually intend to have at the very least, links to all my subsites there.

Name it something simple to start, you can always change it later.

For those that use WordPress, what plugins do you use?

I'm specifically interesting in one for formatting SQL code, but interested in others also.

Akismet - Essential. 99% eliminates spam.

No Self Pings - Doesn't send ping backs to own site (I reference earlier posts often and I don't like that producing trackbacks)

Now Reading Reloaded - My reading list

    SyntaxHighlighter Evolved - code highlighter.

Tweetable - auto tweet on post. I'd say near-essential if you write and schedule posts for future publication.

    Thanks Gail,

Do you actually end up having to pay anything for the Amazon Web Services for the Now Reading Reloaded plugin? It wants cc info so it can bill me automatically...

  • No, as long as you don't use any paid services, like their cloud services (it doesn't have my credit card).

That's just so you can easily add books. You can add manually and avoid any Amazon interference if you like (though that's a pain)

Oh, the hating technology part is absolutely a problem. There's no point to being in this field if you don't have a love for at least *some* part of it.

As for being young and male? That's still no excuse to talk about women the way he does. There's a huge difference between being male and being a jerk. The first condition doesn't automatically equate to the second.

My take too, and why I mostly ignored that comment. Plus for the last year I've been working with a 24 year old who seems to think with his hormones. Maybe I'm getting immune to that attitude.

Oh no, if he's 24 and still not at least starting to wake up, it might be time for a slap about the face & neck. I'm only willing to cut 21 & under ANY slack. After that, time to at least act like a man.
