Are the posted questions getting worse?

Is anyone here working with, or struggling to

    - work in a complex development environment that does automated builds at high volumes (> 1x day)

    - handle complex continuous development or refactoring of databases

    - cloud development or deployment with databases

Red Gate looking to learn more about complex processes and pain points. We have a wandering developer that would like to visit a few places in the US over the next few months.

The big issue in the US is HIPAA and other privacy laws. While I wouldn't mind see if my boss would like to "host" a RedGate Dev, the question is what would the dev be looking at / for and how could my company be assured of the continued integrity & privacy of their data and the confidentiality of any proprietary processes?

I'm not saying anyone would steal, but those are the first questions management is going to ask me if I suggest allowing entry to an outsider who isn't even contracted to us.

We're preparing to do cloud development/deployment through sharepoint, but we're still months away from actually implementing.

Lynn, I'm very glad that you are moving back. I know you've been a bit unhappy there (what with being so close to the Dark Side and all). Seriously, I'm glad you're getting back to something that you like a lot better. Hopefully, this will mean that you will be out here on SSC a bit more also!

Thank you Wayne, and I enjoyed your presentation tonight as well.

You know that code for concatenating strings, that was what I could not remember for the life of me when I was up interviewing for a position with Microsoft. Think you can send me that code snippet so I can put it on a flash drive for future reference?

Maybe Wayne could start that blog of his and post it there too?

Seriously, a flash drive just doesn't seem like enough sometimes for all of the scripts.

Nice gadget - too bad there isn't a 1TB model.

I have the sports model at 4GB and it is very useful and convenient. I'm annoyed that they don't have at least a 16 or 20 GB model.

Once again I feel like I've let too much time go without writing a book 🙁

Planning to write a book then? If so, and you need help, count me in. 🙂

I have 2 that Red Gate wants me to write, which I keep delaying. I have ideas for fiction, and maybe when I grow up I'll get to be like Brandie. 😛

heh, who're you kidding, you're never going to grow up. :-P:hehe:

Hey guys, want a free little toy from Red Gate? It's called Tab Magic and remembers what tabs you had open when you close SSMS. Kinda cool. A product of the down tools week experimentation they allow at the company. Check it out.

Oh, and there's a competition going on between a couple of teams... guess which one I'm backing.

Thanks Grant, I've downloaded it and will be trying it out.

Here's a little bit of info. It's more about understanding pain points and how/why tools don't work well or even if there is an attitude that is common in database work that can be improved: http://www.simple-talk.com/community/blogs/james/archive/2011/08/04/102700.aspx

I currently work in a Continuous Integration environment and have been rudely dropped into the deep end regarding a number of the issues that doing so involves. Unfortunately, I work at a financial firm. There's no way they're going to let in a non-employee that can see over my shoulder to look at the data.

Sorry Steve, I'd love to help you guys on this one but I had to sign away half my life getting in the door. Heck, I'd just love someone else's viewpoints on how to at least file the sharp edges off the pain points I have.

I do, however, applaud the man for not ending up in an ivory tower. One of the things that makes Red Gate a good product.

Nice gadget - too bad there isn't a 1TB model.

Great. A new way for nefarious employees to sneak data out.

Not too bad though - they can only sneak 4GB out at a time

Actually I suspect that nefarious employees are a much smaller problem than incompetent ones (the ones who think it's OK to be carrying unencrypted confidential data on a stick when they go for a heavy after-work drinking session in a bar, or imagine that leaving a laptop with 200GB of unencrypted confidential data on it on a train or in a taxi is not a serious problem) .

Stupidity, human error and negligence will always be bigger problems than nefarious intentions. Partly because the first three are also problems for anyone with nefarious intentions.
