Ask Grant about GoDaddy, and take a couple steps back.

Grant didn't like it at all, but I also believe his configuration was a bit different than what they do currently. I think they have improved upon it and I haven't had any issues for the past 1.5 yrs.

Nope. My setup was in November. The only thing "different" I did was set up a SQL Server database instead of MySQL. The issues were all on the GoDaddy side. I was on a server that was having major problems. They acknowledged that it was all on the server and all on their end. I asked to move to another server. Nope. Can't. OK, move me to MySQL. Nope. Can't. Fix the problem? Working on it. Should be done within a few weeks.... Hello DreamHost. Yeah, can you guys take a database from GoDaddy? You can? Great...

Well, in that case - that SUCKS.

Dreamhost does WordPress blogs on SQL backend?

WordPress blogs use MySQL as the standard backend, though I did find a project through Googling where they're working on WordPress with SQL Server as a backend.

Yeah, I have seen a bunch of people getting away from the MySQL backend to SQL. I have considered it - haven't jumped to the better backend yet. Partly - worried it might break my blog for a while.

Nope. I'm on MySQL now. It's a pain becuase I can't just swoop in there & run a bunch of scripts my way. But, it supposedly runs better on MySQL.

That is the common theme I have heard. I'd still like to try it someday.

I haven't had any problems with running any of the blogs on MySQL and I haven't had a need to run any queries or make any db modifications. If I don't need to interact with it and it runs quietly in the background, letting me do the blogging I want to do, I'm fine with using it.

  • I've been failing at Google-Fu today. I'm trying to track down the name of that pet store (or at least a good copy of the story about it, name or not) that failed a few years ago because they didn't have backups running. Does anyone here remember that one? I can't find it.

Nah, they went down in 2000 because they were managed as well as the 3 dot coms I worked for. This one was recent, 1-3 years ago, they didn't have any kind of database backup and suffered an outage. Everything was gone. I remember the story, I just can't track it down.

I have several WordPress blogs and I use the host Arvixe. They're inexpensive, reliable and flexible. One of the reasons I like them is that not only can I create as many subsites as I want, I can also create WordPress blogs on a Microsoft platform server. This lets me use ASPX for the main website and still use WordPress for any blogs I create.

Also with Arvixe. One other good point. Their technical support is. (both technical and support)

I had a problem with my blog's IP ending up in a blacklist that was resulting in a SA ISP blocking it. Logged the support case, got mail next day asking for details, gave them more details. Guy mails back promising to sort the issue out. Week later I get a reply saying that the site is no longer in the blacklist.

True, I should have mentioned that point. I was having trouble figuring out how to set up multiple blogs on the same site and they were a big help. I like that they have chat as one of their support options.

I suspect he was answering Kraig's question 'So who are you?'

Of course, anyone who's watched Season 2 of Babylon 5 knows that's completely the wrong answer (and it's the wrong answer in the context it was asked here too)

Well, we already knew "What did he want?" 🙂

Can't find a pet store story like that, but here's a similar "out of business because they didn't do database backups right" story:

Ah. That's from TheDailyWTF.com. Keep in mind, those stories are usually (almost always) heavily exaggerated when they're submitted, are "sexed up" by the editor to make them more entertaining, and are then annonymized by changing names and details to make them more lawsuit resistant. By the time they go through all of that, they're more like Hollywood's "Based on Real Events" than they are news articles.
