So Tom, it sounds like what you're saying is, American beer is terrible. Well, I know that I tend to buy imported beer most of the time (and I'm in the U.S.). I like Foster's myself. Also, there is one exception to what I said above about warm beer. Once I was in Ireland and I did like Guinness Stout even though it wasn't served extremely cold. But that's a rich beer, which may help explain why it doesn't give me a headache - the alcohol is absorbed slowly. By the way, alcohol is odd, I understand that it is absorbed straight through the stomach lining. It isn't even digested per se.
Depending on the stength, you may find that as much is absorbed through the tongue and other interior surfaces of the mouth as through the stomach lining.
The main types of beer in England and Scotland tend to have lower alcoholic content than beers which are served cold - typically 3% to 4.5% instead of 4.5% to 7.5% for beers that are usually served close to freezing. If your ever in Britain, try cask beers not keg beers - I suspect somethink like an English dark mild or a Scottish light would not give you an alcohol hit problem. If you drink Scottish Special Ale or English Smooth Ale you get what you asked for - a nasty taste and a headache. We are not as expert as America at brewing really awful beer, but we're certainly capable of doing it.

If by American beer, you're referring to Miller & Budweiser & Coors, you're right. It's awful. But there's a whole category of American beer that's so good, when I was over in England they were selling "American Pale Ale" everywhere. It's basically our version of the IPA that's become popular. If you buy stuff from Harpoon or Stone Brewing, it's not good, it's GREAT.
The key to American beer is to go to the micro-brews and then it's fantastic.
My parking garage at work is right across the street from the Harpoon brewery. I should take the tour there sometime.

Interesting. But since I actually got mine off of a very old post here on an account with no activity for years, I guess I can't complain too much. Now about a year ago, someone "borrowed" Jeff's.
Yep. And I asked him quite nicely to give it up. While the original artwork certainly isn't mine, having the word RBAR in it is. With just a little complaining, he did give it up.

Count me in on this too. San Francisco on my last trip wasn't quite as bad as my previous experiences at LA, but still a big disincentive to travel to the US.

If you do try a Belgian beer once more, try one of the trappisten.
And make sure it is server as it should be server, it matters a lot in the taste.
Methinks you've got work on your brain. But then I'm the opposite: always thinking of beer whilst at work. ๐

I recall my travel to sqlpass a couple of years ago, I took 6 bottles of Chimay ( 2 white, 2 blue, 2 red ) ... of course I always declare I bring along food/drinks on those pesky cards.
arriving at UScustoms the officer noticed I ticked the items and asked about them.
I replied: "Wel, sir, these bottles of Belgian beer are gifts for a friend I meet at sqlpass every year I get there."
The officers eyes started to glitter, "oh boy ... would that be abbey beers"
me:"Yes, sir. The finest I could find"
The officer: "Wow, did you actually bing Chimay ? Which colors ?"
me:"All three of them"
The officer:"I envy your friend. He 's gonna be very pleased ! Have a nice stay."

Oh, I just registered for SQLSaturday #64 in Baton Rouge which will be held in a few days. Plane tickets purchased. Can't wait. I hear this one is a grade-A show.
And we are coming along with the planning of SQLSaturday #97 in Austin, TX on Oct 1st! Call for speakers is still open, but slots are filling up fast http://www.sqlsaturday.com/97/eventhome.aspx.
Finally, we formed a new non-profit that other TX groups can use for their SQLSaturday's sponsorships without having to form their own non-profit: http://www.sqlposse.com.

For those abroad, Chuck Norris was the star of a cheesy tv show called Walker, Texas Ranger. Not sure how much you know about Texas Rangers, but legend seems in indicate that these guys are invincible.
Chuck Norris didn't want to be a Texas Ranger, Texas Rangers wanted to be Chuck Norris. The network didn't cancel his show, Chuck Norris gave the network back. Ok, I'll stop.

I take the train from Boston to Richmond rather than fly just because of that in part.

I looked into taking the train instead of flying, because of that. Would even save me about $20 on the round-trip costs. The problem is, I'd be at my destination for approximately 1 1/2 hours before I'd had to get on the return train and come back, since I've only got a week off this time. I decided I'm just not that into spending the whole vacation on a train. :hehe:

Security's bad enough, but the border control people that act like all visitors are scum and criminals that they have to reluctantly let into the country are the worst.
Anywhere else in the world that I've travelled (from southern africa, far east to europe) the border officers are polite and respectful. In the US I've been shouted at, insulted and told that I should "just turn around and leave right now", and that's not a single example from one trip.
