Whoa! I think we had an epiphany!!! From The Rant:

    foxjazz (3/19/2009)

Lynn, you have completely and utterly convinced me to look for a set based solution to the problems that come as part of the job.

    Cudos for that!

That sounds like the best we could expect.

    foxjazz (3/19/2009)

I have had extensive experience with set based queries in the past, and currently. Having experience with sql server since 1995, table locking and such things and multi-user server is not new to me at all. Although sometimes I struggle with certain concepts that I have infrequently used, (sub queries) for one. I have rarely had the need to use them.

His experience seems only to have extended as far doing simple queries, inserts and updates, probably from C# applications. I suspect he hasn't written many views, procedures, triggers, etc if he hasn't need to use subqueries! I rarely write a query that doesn't have a subquery! πŸ˜€

Reading the brief descriptions of parts of foxjazz's system, it sounds like it was incompletely specified at the start and has 'evolved' (like a lot of systems do!). Some features have obviously been proposed but not properly thought out, then signed off and hence had to be implemented in inefficient ways ("'cos that's what the CEO/MD/Chairman wants!"). An example is the use of 'bands' for part numbers which depend on the source; much better to assign the part numbers completely sequentially and add a source prefix.

Anyway, while I'm willing to offer some 'keyhole' fixes, I don't want to argue over a redesign of someone else's system (especially as they aren't paying me!), so I'm going to sit down on the sidelines for now and watch how long the 'Rant' goes on.

I'm going to join you on the sidelines. Jeff and Sergiy look like they are having a blast at this one now. I feel like I did my part, and he has recognized that set based solutions beat the pants off cursor based solutions. Time for someone else to further his education.

Looks like Jeff doesn't want to pick this one up either. I can't blame him! πŸ˜‰

Given that further improvement probably means changing several parts of a distributed system, I don't think foxjazz is going to be convinced to do much.

As it's friday, it must be time for us guys on the sidelines to have a virtual beer!

    Beer? Did someone say beer?

Hey Derek, have you tried the Meantime IPA currently stocked by Sainsbury's yet? Another microbrewery I think. Lovely stuff!

    Is that Sainsbury's, UK?

    If so I must investigate

Yep and if you're London-based it gets better 😎

While that does qualify as a weapon, I'm not sure if we're subscribing to the Geneva Convention around here. Are chemical weapons of mass ickiness allowed?

I used to have a source for the same stuff, but it eventually stopped. It just seemed like forever. It was... oh, really three or four days shy of forever.

    You lucky lucky *(&^&(*((!

Check out Brewdog from Scotland, the names are great (Punk IPA, Trashy Blonde) and the beers are excellent.

    Thanks for the tip.

I'm only a very recent real ale afficionado, so the only tip I can offer in return is York Brewery's Centurion's Ghost - delicious!

  • I haven't sat down to a hand-drawn real ale since 1993... so... I hate you all. I hope they have nothing left but Coors.

Luckily brew pubs are all over the US, so we get good beer. It's just not quite as good as what you can get all over merry ole England.

My nearest supermarkets are Morrisons then Tesco (which I drive past morning and evening). The nearest Sainsbury's is about 7 miles away in a direction I don't often go.

I think the mere mention of Coors would get you booted out of a CAMRA event πŸ˜›

Methinks you need to engineer a trip to the UK soonish!

Do US ales get silly1 names like the UK ones do?

    (1) In a good way, I mean!

Yes they can do! Check out Rogue Ales, sometimes found in Oddbins, also found at the beer stall at Borough Market (perilously close to the fantastic Market Porter bar).

Sorry Grant. When you next make it over here, there will be a queue of TSQL monkeys waiting to serve you with a decent beer. I'll be in that queue.

  • There are an incredible range of names for beers here in the US from funny and silly, to bordering on offensive... I know of a few due to the crazy liquor laws in various states where either the state or the fed liquor control board told them they couldn't use the name due to such things... I don't remember any off the top of my head, but I do know they exist...

Here's a list of beers to be poured at an upcoming event in DC. As you can see some of the names are a bit out there while some are rather descriptive (what fun is that!) Of course mentioning most of these beers will get you kicked right out of a CAMRA event.
