Yup. And voted accordingly. 🙂So, you voted for one of the other guys? 😛 I'm just kidding. Thanks, Kiara.
ROFL! Oh, I handed you that one on a silver platter...
I lurk a lot more than I post, often because by the time I can get to answering things I actually know enough about to be helpful with, one of y'all has already helped the poster out. So I get to learn a *lot* - by cross checking how I would have handled something with what you guys post.
Jeff, I owe you for your tally tables posts, if for nothing else. They saved me from pulling my hair out over a calendaring issue awhile back - and also helped me understand why the CTE's I'd used to fix the problem in my first try didn't help the underlying query's performance.
So - a well deserved nomination, congrats on being a finalist, and I hope you win.

But a late congrats to Lynn as well.
Dang it. I haven't been keeping up and I've obviously missed something good.
Lynn... what did you do?
My oldest daughter, the one in the Army, is going to have a baby in February. I'm going to be a grandfather.
Unfortunately, I may not get over to Germany when the baby is born as I may not have the funds. Unfortunately, I am also now divorced (final in April) so funds are tight supporting two households.
Ah... ok. I feel much better. I knew about you becoming a Grandad. Congratulations, again!
I didn't know about the divorce. They're a strange and very weird mix of good times and bad times. Hang in there, buddy... things will get better.

All joking aside, I'd love to see you win this one.
I never did read what the winner would be awarded before the folks at work nominated me. I read it about 5 minutes ago. OMG! Admission to PASS, 4 days hotel coverage, and $300 bucks towards air fare and a totally awesome Red-Gate software package (with 3 years of help-support, no less!) to help make day-to-day life a whole lot easier!
I went to PASS last year and missed out on a lot because they asked me to put together a 2nd presentation about a day before I flew to Seattle. I spent most of my time hunched over my laptop and missed things like the SQL Server Casino Night which also means I missed meeting a lot of the people I wanted to meet. I understand that Gail Shaw will be co-presenting with you and she couldn't make it last year. Winning would mean that I finally get to check meeting her in person off of my "bucket list" AND I'd get to see you again!
Two of the things I really enjoyed at PASS 2010 were the "Ask an expert" sessions and the "Birds of a feather" lunch. I got to meet and help lot's of folks at those. I'd love to do that again. That was even more thrilling than being a presenter.
I have to echo your words, Grant... Please help "Santa" and the dust bunnies get to PASS 2011! 🙂

I have to admit that working at Honeywell and with Oracle has taken me away from what I truely love, SQL Server and the awesome community that comes with it. I have yet to find anything like SSC or the SQL Server community working with Oracle. The more I work with Oracle, the more I like SQL Server, even with some of its short comings. In some ways, I think SQL Server does things better than Oracle.Couldn't agree more. I've been working with both during the last year and I have learnt that:
1) There's no Oracle online community that can compare to SSC.
2) Oracle professionals keep their tricks jealously. They rarely blog and are not encouraged at all by Oracle.
3) Oracle forums are totally useless. A simple Google search on any Oracle topic will take you to a forum where an unfortunate n00b has the same issues you have and a self-nominated "guru" curses him with RTFM and the like. No will to teach or educate: RTFM is the standard answer, ranging from the abrupt acronym to more elaborate wordings, with the (poorly) hidden intent to show you how a clueless idiot you are.
4) One single day of work of an Oracle consultant costs what you earn in a month (it's the same with MS, to be honest). As soon as he arrives, spends at least an hour looking at the system and telling you how a clueless idiot you are, with that commiseration look in his eyes.
He knows everything, but doesn't solve anything: when he goes away, your system performs as bad as before, but, at least, you know you're a clueless idiot.
5) It's supposed to be rock-solid, but crashes badly at least once a month. (Obviously, it does so because you're a clueless idiot, not because the product sucks)
6) Whenever you run into a bug (there are plenty), stay away from Oracle My Support. Find a workaround or be prepared to ping-pong with the support people for at least 6 months.
[/RANT]
I could continue, but I think I made my point.
BWAA-HAAA!!!! Don't hold back! Say what you really mean! 😛
I try not to bash on Oracle but I've found all of the things you've stated (and more) to be absolutely true. The only one that seems to understand that people need help is Tom Kite (spelling?) and I've not been to "Ask Tom" in years. Is he still around?

Wow Jeff must make a nice santa in real life too, not just on ssc! :w00t:
Heh... thanks, Remi. And just like Santa, I live a couple miles North of Canada. 😀
Wrong thread... I'm the only one who'll understand that one :w00t:.
That also make my USA answer even more correct now:exclamation:
Then, I did good! 🙂 Thanks for being a good friend, Remi. I never did thank you for the RBAR article you wrote over on Simple-Talk. That was great!

Tom Kyte is still around. He has had his "Ask Tom" column in Oracle Magazine every month for years now. BTW, that magazine is quite informative on anything Oracle, and best about it, it is absolutely free. It ended up in my snail mail box one day (don't know how I got the honour to receive it) and I haven't stopped re-subscribing every year since then.
Edit: Fixed a typo.

My vote is in. I hope you get it, Jeff. You're the only one of the lot that I know actually has a couple of "official" SQL phrases coined. On a side note, I'm trying something new on my blog. I'm doing a SQL Server Tip of the Day bit. Nothing fancy. Just a short "this is how I do this" sort of thing. I'll see how long I can manage to keep it up. If anyone has any suggestions for this, I'd love to hear them and will give due credit. The idea is to give people something short, quick, and easy to reference. Nothing complicated or longer than a couple of paragraphs.
Heh... it's amazing. I never, in my wildest dreams, ever thought that a simple acronym like "RBAR" would take off and go world wide. I guess I hit a nerve with it.
And thanks for the tip on the changes to your blog. I'll take a look and see if I can can come up with an idea or two for you.

So you're telling me that I single-handedly launched your career which is resulting in a free PASS pass and RG tools? I smell a lawsuit aiming right at the north pole if I don't get my fair share :w00t:.

I was just coming over to post a comment about someone we know and (at least pretend to) respect that was in need of some support. Come on guys, let's get Jeff to the Summit.
I had no idea that there was a pass to the Summit that went along with this. Is that really true? I knew it would be announced at the Summit but had no idea that there might be an admission ticket in it, as well. If that's true and if I'm fortunate enough to win, I guess I'll be buying a plane ticket.
Oh my... I just had a thought. If I'm lucky enough to win, you guys are going to make "Santa" where a Red shirt, aren't ya? Maybe I should let the beard and hair grow starting now, just in case. 😛
Yeah, there was one the last two years I know. All joking aside, I'd love to see you win this one.
would growing them red add to your chances :w00t::-D:hehe:
( and our chances of meeting you once more )
Heh... I think I frighten people enough as it is, already. 😀 If I make it out to the Summit because of this competition, we're definitely going to have to spend some time searching for the bottom of a couple of mugs of beer together. It was great to finally meet you last year.

Sure did. I guess that makes you pretty much immortal from this point on. I don't see that term nor the code improvements you're teaching ever dying out of the community.
So I guess that makes you the Micheal Jackson of SQL Server... still alive and breathing (which is not so obivous in your picture, but that's another story). 😛
