    Jannie,

Welcome to The Thread. This thread has turned into the local water cooler where all are welcome. If you take a few months and read the entire thread you will come to know many of its denizens in ways that may surprise you.

It is used to vent, to ask for help in other threads, to simply explore each others interests, to pass on news that you want friends to know about (both good and bad).

So how do you reply, any way you want (within reason of course).

We try not to have technical discussions here, but hey, even those can still occur around a water cooler.

There's someone you all know that deserves your vote here[/url].

I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. πŸ˜‰

I was just coming over to post a comment about someone we know and (at least pretend to) respect that was in need of some support. Come on guys, let's get Jeff to the Summit.

I had no idea that there was a pass to the Summit that went along with this. Is that really true? I knew it would be announced at the Summit but had no idea that there might be an admission ticket in it, as well. If that's true and if I'm fortunate enough to win, I guess I'll be buying a plane ticket.

Oh my... I just had a thought. If I'm lucky enough to win, you guys are going to make "Santa" where a Red shirt, aren't ya? Maybe I should let the beard and hair grow starting now, just in case. πŸ˜›

Yeah, there was one the last two years I know. All joking aside, I'd love to see you win this one.

But a late congrats to Lynn as well.

Dang it. I haven't been keeping up and I've obviously missed something good.

    Lynn... what did you do?

My oldest daughter, the one in the Army, is going to have a baby in February. I'm going to be a grandfather.

Unfortunately, I may not get over to Germany when the baby is born as I may not have the funds. Unfortunately, I am also now divorced (final in April) so funds are tight supporting two households.

    Congratulations Grandad! That's wonderful.

When is a table not a table?

OK, it's a table. It maybe has four legs (one at each corner) and a plane top. Or maybe it's one of the other bits of furniture that have a similar function, or perhaps a rectangular section of an EXCEL spreadsheet, things that outside the database world are commonly called tables.

But so far as relational databases are concened, it is certainly not a table. Celko stated very clearly why not: "it has no key, no way to ever have a key". Every column explicitly allows NULL, so that's a true statement.

Yes, MS SQL allows a "table" which could not imaginably be a representation of a relation because every column allows NULL. THat, however, is one of MS SQL's greatest faults. It's quite unusual to discover something like this, on which SQLC members with vastly different views of SQL Server and of Relational Theory like Celko, Steven999, Dave Portas, and myself all agree - there are pretty few things you'll ever get more that two of us to agree on.

Maybe I'm breaking the rules, talking technical on the thread: but Jason asked a technical question, so I've written a technical answer.

Is that part about Server names true? I know database names and tables and columns, etc... don't have to be in Latin-1, but I've never named a server, so I don't know that one.

I have to admit that working at Honeywell and with Oracle has taken me away from what I truely love, SQL Server and the awesome community that comes with it. I have yet to find anything like SSC or the SQL Server community working with Oracle. The more I work with Oracle, the more I like SQL Server, even with some of its short comings. In some ways, I think SQL Server does things better than Oracle.

Couldn't agree more. I've been working with both during the last year and I have learnt that:

    1) There's no Oracle online community that can compare to SSC.

    2) Oracle professionals keep their tricks jealously. They rarely blog and are not encouraged at all by Oracle.

    3) Oracle forums are totally useless. A simple Google search on any Oracle topic will take you to a forum where an unfortunate n00b has the same issues you have and a self-nominated "guru" curses him with RTFM and the like. No will to teach or educate: RTFM is the standard answer, ranging from the abrupt acronym to more elaborate wordings, with the (poorly) hidden intent to show you how a clueless idiot you are.

    4) One single day of work of an Oracle consultant costs what you earn in a month (it's the same with MS, to be honest). As soon as he arrives, spends at least an hour looking at the system and telling you how a clueless idiot you are, with that commiseration look in his eyes.

He knows everything, but doesn't solve anything: when he goes away, your system performs as bad as before, but, at least, you know you're a clueless idiot.

    5) It's supposed to be rock-solid, but crashes badly at least once a month. (Obviously, it does so because you're a clueless idiot, not because the product sucks)

    6) Whenever you run into a bug (there are plenty), stay away from Oracle My Support. Find a workaround or be prepared to ping-pong with the support people for at least 6 months.

    [/RANT]

I could continue, but I think I made my point.

Zowie! I think I've known you even before I knew Lynn and Gail! Now that I think about it, I believe Remi fits in that same category. Remember Frank Kalis and Sushila?

Used to correspond with Frank a lot but I think he changed jobs and email. He does post on another forum.

Thanks for being one of the good guys for all those years, David.

Kind words ol' friend, it is what you engender in others that does that. πŸ™‚

And yes, I remember well the "Bankers Rounding". I seem to remember that my solution turned out to meet David Burrows requirements, or did he have to tweak it a bit to make it work?

Not sure it was my requirements but I did get in the fray a bit on that one.

Any way, that one got a bit heated at times.

I'll say but some of it was good in it's own sweet way πŸ˜‰

  • Jeff, the late congrats for Lynn was, indeed, for the news of becoming a grand parent!

There was talk of a new job, but I hadn't caught up with that yet, but I think Lynn may have given the ending away! πŸ™‚

Lynn - sorry to here about the divorce (from SQL Server obviously!)

I work in a mainly Oracle shop, and have to wave the SQL Server flag on my own!

But being serious, hope it hasn't put too much strain on you or the kids. It doesn't matter how old they are now they are still kids when it comes to things like this.

Bankers Rounding - I remember that one. It was fun watching from the outside!

SQL Bits - I took quite a few during the 3 days, about 10 at the start of each session as I was really there to learn! Then went through them to see what I had captured. Got it down to about 70 in the end. I really liked the one of Brad, as you said Jeff, it captured him!

If the guys as SQL Bits don't put them all up I'll see about sorting out a flickr account - I take the pictures but forget about posting them anywhere!! I have a very silly one of Kevin Kline...

Wow Jeff must make a nice santa in real life too, not just on ssc! :w00t:

Heh... thanks, Remi. And just like Santa, I live a couple miles North of Canada. πŸ˜€

Wrong thread... I'm the only one who'll understand that one :w00t:.

  • My vote is in. I hope you get it, Jeff. You're the only one of the lot that I know actually has a couple of "official" SQL phrases coined.

On a side note, I'm trying something new on my blog. I'm doing a SQL Server Tip of the Day bit. Nothing fancy. Just a short "this is how I do this" sort of thing. I'll see how long I can manage to keep it up. If anyone has any suggestions for this, I'd love to hear them and will give due credit. The idea is to give people something short, quick, and easy to reference. Nothing complicated or longer than a couple of paragraphs.
