There's someone you all know that deserves your vote here[/url].I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. π
Wow Jeff must make a nice santa in real life too, not just on ssc! :w00t:
In that page, Jeff is the only finalist who's not smiling.
That picture must have been taken right after he found a cursor in production code and it must have been cropped to hide the pork-chop launcher! π
Just kidding, Jeff! Don't take offence!
If there's someone who deserves to be called "Exceptional", it's you.
Oh, he's smiling. You just can't see it behind that mustache and beard.
He doesn't want us to know that he is glad he submitted himself for Exceptional DBA against his own moral code:-D

Oh my! Thank you for the support, folks. For the record... I didn't submit myself. The folks I work with did. I'll admit that I pointed them to the nomination site and asked them to make a submission if they thought I was worthy. Apparently, they did both and I'm truly humbled to actually be a finalist. I haven't seen what they've written except for one who forwarded his submission to me.
Heh... and you're not the first ones to make the "Santa" comment... you should see me with my "winter hair".
Funny thing about my picture... I didn't have one of myself and none of the folks at work could take a steady picture with a cell phone... so I took one of myself in a mirror in a poorly lit conference room. It was the best I could do at short notice. Admittedly, I limited the photo to a "head shot" because I do look like Santa in more ways than one... if I lay on my back, I'm two inches taller. :hehe: And, yeah... I'm smiling and the beard does hide it. π
Thank all of you again for the the kind words and the votes. Like I told my Dad recently... "I aim to please. I sometimes miss, but I'm always aiming." π

Good golly, Miss Molly! I just looked back at how many posts there are about my nomination. Thanks, Gianluca, for bringing it up. I'm at work right now but I'll be online (as always) tonight. You folks are absolutely awesome! Thank you VERY much! I am truly humbled.

Another vote from me!
Congrats Jeff - I know it's been said before but I've certainly learn a lot from you over the years so many thanks.
As well as learning from quite a few others on this site!
The picture of Brad from the judges' page is one of mine from SQL Bits 8! So good to see they are getting out and about. I sent a few to Red Gate for them to use π Before anyone thinks I'm after royalties...
I've got about 1000 pages at 10 comments each that I've missed on this thread. So I'll have some fun catching up over the next couple of weeks.
But a late congrats to Lynn as well.
Cheers,
Rodders...

There are some pretty good DBAs as finalists, but I personally chose Jeff. Not because it is a popularity contest, but for two main reasons:
1) The descriptions of each candidate show Jeff to be the most exceptional in my opinion.
2) Jeff has personally helped me, many times by helping someone else while I was 'watching'. #selfishreason.
Therefore, I both percieve Jeff to be most exceptional, and I have personally experienced Jeff to be most exceptional in my own life.
Ba'am. Decision was easy for me after reading each of their bios.

Shame you can't see who is in the lead in voting. When are the results to be announced?

Congrats to Jeff for making the list. I voted for him too because he was the only one on the list I knew and had been helped by. Years ago when I was inexperienced, one of his post stopped me from writing a cursor and helped me to understand the set based logic. Thanks Jeff for being you and for your contributions to the community.

And another vote. Just reading Jeff's articles and comments told me he's one of the best.

Sounds strange you thanking me after all the help I had from you!
You're one of a kind, Mr. Moden and "Exceptional" is not really enough for you.
I don't want to take anything away from the other finalists, but if somebody ends up voting for them, probably doesn't know enough about you.

When is a table not a table?
OK, it's a table. It maybe has four legs (one at each corner) and a plane top. Or maybe it's one of the other bits of furniture that have a similar function, or perhaps a rectangular section of an EXCEL spreadsheet, things that outside the database world are commonly called tables.
But so far as relational databases are concened, it is certainly not a table. Celko stated very clearly why not: "it has no key, no way to ever have a key". Every column explicitly allows NULL, so that's a true statement.
Yes, MS SQL allows a "table" which could not imaginably be a representation of a relation because every column allows NULL. THat, however, is one of MS SQL's greatest faults. It's quite unusual to discover something like this, on which SQLC members with vastly different views of SQL Server and of Relational Theory like Celko, Steven999, Dave Portas, and myself all agree - there are pretty few things you'll ever get more that two of us to agree on.
Maybe I'm breaking the rules, talking technical on the thread: but Jason asked a technical question, so I've written a technical answer.
