Thanks everyone. Wasn't actually planning on announcing it here.

Congratulations, Gail. This means that the top two non-employee posters for SSC have been selected again. πŸ™‚

I don't feel qualified to be posting on the thread, but I'll break my rule for today.

    You too Jeff?

Like Gail, very much deserved... you help me and many others more than you know.

Qualified to post on The Thread.... hmmmm .... I wouldn't worry about that if I were ... well, anyone. We set a pretty low bar for everything except manners at this particular watercooler. And even the manners can be stretched pretty far if it makes everyone involved laugh. πŸ˜›

One of the arguments I always like to use is: What would it cost to absorbe the same knowledge when following the regular courses, on that many topics, with that much directly usable info ?

I can imagine someone countering that argument by offering to acquire the summit DVDs instead... <devil><advocate/></devil>

Could do that - but the networking sometimes is more valuable than attending the courses. πŸ˜‰

It's not even close. Imagine your career without access to this site... very clearly extremely valuable.

    Yes.

The first PASS US Summit I attended my company got more value from a 10 minute discussion (with one of the CSS guys) than from anything else I learnt (and it was a hell of a lot)

My employer gets quite a bit of value out of my networking. πŸ˜€

Seriously though, my network gives my employer greater access to knowledge beyond mine and I use my network frequently to help do the job for the employer. I'd say it is a win win;-)

    Agreed.

Think of the people in your network.

I have access to people like:

    Gail

    Grant

    Jeff Moden

    Paul White

    Adam Machanic

    #sqlhelp

    Paul Randal

    etc etc etc

All of these people are helpful and willing to help no matter how close to them you are in the network.

  • Just so we're all clear on this, I'm interested in how you justify things like attending the summit to the person paying. I have heard of some people having 'difficult' discussions with their employer over the relative merits.

Hardest question I have ever encountered. I have yet to find a good way to do this. In the end, for the employer (my experience) they are not interested in the networking. Though networking is of great value. They want to know immediate benefit. Typically, if there is a session that is going to be related to an ongoing project - that information would be key.

Also, comparing the cost of conference to 1 week of training seems to be of help. Unless that training is like Immersions training from SQLSkills, it usually does not compare to what will be learned at Summit.

Outside of those efforts, I sometimes try to meet them halfway on cost.

Unfortunately, not all of us can. Especially given the recent economic woes. Training has been cut back severely. Conferences like PASS are not an option unless we take vacation and pay for it ourselves.

And for contractors like me, the economic woes have nothing to do with it. We're expected to pay for all our own training and travel and have no paid vacation to take to go to a conference.

What has helped me get these trips approved in the past are clear and present project goals where there were relevant sessions were being offered plus a commitment to formally share findings with the rest of the team upon returning to the office. That has translated into brown bag learning sessions (with a catered lunch where possible, not a purist Brown Bag event I know), sharing of conference Schwag with the boss (critical) and direct involvement with project planning meetings and sometimes requirements writing.
