Just an update, the horse looks good. Vet came today, said there will be a scar, but full recovery expected.

Did you find the cause yet ? ( prevention measures )
No, walked all around the property, can't find a place where there was impact, though there are quite a few places that I worry about. Will remediate those.
Can't make things completely horse proof, unfortunately, and as skittish as the beasts are, they do tend to hurt themselves.

Speaking of it: a friend of mine guessed it might have been caused by a stallion hoof.

Directly followed by her asking "What the h*** are you discussing on a SQL forum????"
