Are the posted questions getting worse?

Our "real world financial problem" individual sent me a note that he got a "real answer" on the MSDN forums.

He ignored the fact that someone on the thread said it was homework, and his "real answer" was a hint from Erland to look at unpivot.

So he solved the crisis ....:-D:hehe:

Good for him... I don't recall it having anything to do with UnPivot at all.

Well ya, the unpivot helps you create a begin / end pair. Which is then easier to filter. But I agree, that was only part of the problem.

The real solution probably had dynamic sql too (assuming new columns are added each year).

Anyone noticed that we now have pretty pictures as well as alphabet soup? http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1123813-359-1.aspx

Yeah - not too sure what to think of it - much the same as the alphabet.

Who is it? To me, looks like a really old, bad pic of Sinatra?

Wasn't talking about the avatar pic. Earlier today his sig had pictures for each of the certs listed.

Really??? Wow... that's unique all right. Wonder why he changed it?

  • That's what I call posting too much... I met my 1K challenge so now back to a couple posts once in a while :w00t:.

@Steve. Can you find out what's the max # of posts I did in 1 calendar month? IIRC it was 1500. Had no life outside SS back then :hehe:.

  • As soon as I get my VPN working, I'll look it up. Right now it's won't maintain a connection and I'm a little stuck.

If I passed, could I add "Thread Certified" to my resume` ?

I thought you already had "Certified" added to your resume.

He's not only sane, he has a certificate to prove it.

    😉

Is there an in missed out in there?

    Tom

  • Good point, Tom.

I was thinking that "certifiable" might be more appropriate than "certified".

Wowzer! You do more in one month than I do...

Well, I guess I have to stop that sentence right there, now don't I?

    Thanks,

I missed out o the pretty pictures.

But looked at his link, and found myself somewhat startled by the fact that he became a "senior DBA" after one year's development experience (using J2EE, Java, Java Server Faces, Java Server Pages, Crystal Reports, log4j, IBM Rational, jboss, and tomcat as well as some database related stuff - doesn't appear to leave a lot of time for the db side) followed by just 15 months as a junior dba.

"Someone" says or said he was senior... nobody from ssc tho!

Job titles are relative. If you've got 16 mos experience in SQL Server and the next most experienced person has 6 mos, you get called "Senior" by management who knows no other way of differentiating. If you're the only one there that uses that tech, you can probably convince management to give you a Senior title based on that alone.

  • Haven't been on here in awhile, and haven't even tried to catch up yet. I've been packing and cleaning the last 2 weeks and tomorrow is the big day when the movers come and start taking our stuff up to NH. We'll be leaving shortly after the truck leaves and be arriving in NH on Friday.

I actually start work next Monday on a 6 month contract in Concord, NH. I'll be doing T-SQL performance tuning mostly. They have a 3rd-party app that isn't scaling and need the SP's re-written to improve performance. I'll likely be making some indexing recommendation's as well. They do have a production DBA, that, while they haven't mentioned working with him, I'm planning on getting to know him and working with him. The application is a port from Oracle, so I'm betting there will be some quick fixes I can apply to take advantage of SQL Server's architectural differences.

I'll be travelling the rest of the week so probably won't be online much for a couple of weeks as I'll need to get internet service to my rent.

Looking forward to seeing my New England friends this summer. Hope to get to Grant's UG sometime and get him and others up to the Seacoast SQL User Group in NH (yes you Stefan!)
