Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Brandie Tarvin (5/27/2011)

Back to blogging. I was thinking of using Blosxom on my website. What I'd like to do, though, is integrate LiveJournal with whatever other tool I end up using, so I don't lose all my LiveJournal followers. Basically, anything posted to WordPress or Blosxom would post to LJ and vice versa.

Can WordPress or Blosxom do that?

I did a quick google on "crosspost lj wordpress" and there appear to be plugins that go either way.

I am totally new to blogging so this is just a guess, but can RSS syndication handle this? A lot of folks syndicate so their own blog posts from their personal blogs end up on SCC or SSPedia, etc.

On my website, I actually have two totally different WordPress 'blogs', one using a certain theme which looks more corporate for my main business pages (home page is very custom and all back pages have a right-hand bar with stuff on it), and a /blogs/jim area which is a totally different WordPress blog/theme/db. On my Corp back-pages, that right hand bar has a section of RSS entries which pulls in content overviews from the other WordPress site; including an image I think. If you allow your WordPress blog to 'shove all content over RSS', then your LJ blog can hopefully tap in and pull the content over.

I don't [know how to] syndicate, so others can explain that method.

Wow, you thought that there were too many other DBAs that were better suited than Brandie? That's not very nice...

    😛

Funny, but you know this is not what I meant. At all.

Of course not, but English gives you so many opportunities to misinterpret things, which I find endlessly amusing.

Especially when written by Italian people... 😉

One of the more embarassing online conversations I ever got myself into, I actually asked the person what their native language was, and which translation tool they were using to get it into English, and it turned out they were born and raised in the US and "native English speaking". I swear the literacy was so bad I really did think it was something like Google translation from X into English, and I was hoping we'd be able to get a real translation. Made it very awkward to respond to that. (Haven't seen that person on the site in a long time. Never really did get over my faux pas.)

Was that in the last couple of years? Think I remember that...and if it's the one I'm remembering, I was right there with you.

Ugh! I forgot to add this disclaimer for the Italians. 😛

Actually, I've never come across other Italian people on SSC, but you never know...

I'm pretty sure WordPress has a built-in RSS feed. There should be a link on your main page.

LJ requires a paid account to set up an RSS feed. @=(

I googled "Livejournal integrate with Blosxom" yesterday but got a bunch of how to transfer over your blog from one to the other. The word "crosspost" did not occur to me. Shall have to research with that now.

Well, the nice thing is that if there's a WordPress or Blosxom crosspost plugin, then you can use the RSS feed on that side and not have to pay for an LJ account.

BTW, I use Arvixe.com as my hosting service and I like it so far.

    For personal or business?

How's the customer service for site problems?

Also, have you used the shopping cart technology at all?

Personal, just for my blogs. I have these great plans for a business site, but never seem to have time for it. Customer Service was quite good when I had initial questions and when I had some questions about setting up WordPress. I haven't really had any problems with them, so I haven't found out about more customer service. I've also had very little downtime for my site.

I have not used shopping cart technology other than developing some back in the 90s.

    One very uncomfortable PM sent...

From the posts the person has made, they are totally out of their depth. 6TB DBs, major perf problems and barely a clue.

With a 6TB database I would be terrified to even apply for the job.

My first thought was "I wonder what their maintenance looks like.."

If I had to guess, I'd say 'Maintenance? What maintenance?'

Maintenance ? That's for cars, planes and trains :w00t:

You have to maintain cars????? You mean they really aren't supposed to require annual replacement????

About two years ago sounds right. The person had a huge chip on her shoulder about race and gender as well. I don't remember all the details, but it was messy.

I think it was one year ago.

Embarassing, really. Especially for what she said, not much for the weird language.

About 500 miles per week, sometimes more. But the statement was meant to be humorous. "Meant to be" != "Was", apparently. 🙂

Nah, it was humorous, I just have personal experience with how long you can drive a car with no maintenance. : -)
