I think you were fine, the person you were responding to though? What a strange rant. Bears no reation to any reality I've seen.

Agreed. I was trying to figure out how the divorce comment related at all to the topic at hand. Sounds like a very bitter rant that you responded to calmly and reasonably.

Divorce comment? The closest I could get to assuming he had or might want to have any family at all was when he said
I'm lucky, I don't have a wife/kids, and although I don't want them, that's not the point. It's every man's absolute RIGHT to be able to provide for a family, and there's no damn way I could have provided for one after 2007.
Did I overlook anything?
Anyhow, I hope my comments on that thread didn't put him down even more...

Nah, you're good, and thanks. π I just re-read the article to see if there were hidden or implied connections to what he wrote and... not really. It's like he just read the title of it and went from there. π
Thanks gentlemen.

He said:
While I don't begrudge him his "success" (and in fact, I've given him many a shoulder to cry on during that time through a messy divorce), it's a bitter thing that I know 10x what he does, yet he has stayed paid and I haven't
I was kind of wondering the relevance of that when he stated it. It just seemed like he was on a rant that got personal. Strange. That's all.

The only part I took exception to is that part. I'm sorry, you don't have a right to work. That implies (or is it infers) that an employer is obligated to hire you.

One very uncomfortable PM sent...From the posts the person has made, they are totally out of their depth. 6TB DBs, major perf problems and barely a clue.
With a 6TB database I would be terrified to even apply for the job.
My first thought was "I wonder what their maintenance looks like.."
If I had to guess, I'd say 'Maintenance? What maintenance?'

I guess I'm in fantasy land since this scope is too big.
Huge, that's more a week's course.
In real live, do you really go for a trace and plan analysis first?
Not solely. IRL I do a server audit first (if they'll pay for that), so I know what DBs exist, what their settings are, what the server settings are, what the hardware's like and I can address bad settings straight off.
I usually start with perfmon or similar...
Same, along with some scripts that pull some of the plan cache, TempDB-intensive queries, File IO stats & wait stats.

Back to blogging. I was thinking of using Blosxom on my website. What I'd like to do, though, is integrate LiveJournal with whatever other tool I end up using, so I don't lose all my LiveJournal followers. Basically, anything posted to WordPress or Blosxom would post to LJ and vice versa.
Can WordPress or Blosxom do that?

I had to add my two cents about Craig's article and blog about it too. I hope that drives more traffic to the site.

Wow, you thought that there were too many other DBAs that were better suited than Brandie? That's not very nice...π
Funny, but you know this is not what I meant. At all.
Of course not, but English gives you so many opportunities to misinterpret things, which I find endlessly amusing.
Especially when written by Italian people... π
One of the more embarassing online conversations I ever got myself into, I actually asked the person what their native language was, and which translation tool they were using to get it into English, and it turned out they were born and raised in the US and "native English speaking". I swear the literacy was so bad I really did think it was something like Google translation from X into English, and I was hoping we'd be able to get a real translation. Made it very awkward to respond to that. (Haven't seen that person on the site in a long time. Never really did get over my faux pas.)

I'll say that most of the better applications were self-written. It's hard for someone else to do a good job listing everything you do.A DBA that can write? That's pretty Exceptional right there! I assume the winner was the one that spelt their name right π
